#307802 Zelda WiiU - thoughts?

Posted by 3Dude on 28 January 2015 - 11:26 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Lol....

Well, if the search function worked Im sure he would have found the the old threads.

Most of us are super stoked, I know myself personally being an overworld Zelda fan of old, has felt rather ignored since Oot, which lead to a series of go straight to the dungeon and do puzzles entries, so Im glad to see an end to the hub based spatial compression world design.

Game still looks a little rough around the edges, things like missing texture layers in conspicuous places, and other tell tale signs of a work in progress.

But taking in the general scene composition, Like Xenoblade, and Xenoblade chronicles X its so refreshing to see a hand designed world of this scale. It really does make a night and day difference between procedural generation.

Looking at monoliths past involvement with Zelda, I suspect Zelda U and Xenoblade X are sharing some engine tech.

It would be cool if that was links 12-13 year oldish tom boy sister. That would explain the lack of breasts many are pointing out.

But let's be honest, it's Link.

'Another interesting comment I've heard, quite frequently actually, is that, "Oh Link's a woman. Link is female now." That might be something that consciously we kind of did, but not to say anything specific – I am not saying anything specific – but, I am hoping people continue to comment, and I will continue to follow the fan comments and reactions to the trailer. I am certainly curious, and I am sure there are things we as developers can glean.'

Oh Anouma, tricky tricky.

What sort of artstyle are you looking for then?

I think this one looks decent but Skyward Sword is probably my favourite.

Whatever Nintendo wants.

But this? Its a ripped gamecube/wii model and a pulled straight from the misty cave environment asset demo.

This is god awful.... For Nintendo.

Skyward sword was pretty impressive with its art direction. Ancient cistern is a marvel of design.

Which are all in jokes and references. Not integral game design.

I think you have lost track of what you were arguing about....

However, the chain chomp absolutely is integral to links awakening, you literally cannot progress through the game without its gameplay mechanics.

And past that, piranha plants, goombas, and even kirby were cameo enemies in links awakening.

Which is the exact same situation you are talking about.

And finally, metroids are also enemies in the kid icarus series.

Even though it is fake I would love it if the real Zelda looked similar to this. It looks similar to TP but a lot less dull.

IMO Nintendo is better with AA than a lot of other developers. SM3DW looks sharp as hell, whereas games like COD often look 'blurry' and jagged to the point that it just becomes frustrating.

3d worlds aa is rather selective, sometimes it works great, sometimes there are lots of jaggies... And it can happen all within the same screen, with some objects gorgously smooth, while another is covered in jaggies.

This, this far and away above beyond, on another level than that solution, its practically perfect.

If this is a refinement or evolution of that line of AA, it is ridiculously impressive.

From my game pad?

Wait a minute...

You are claiming watching an hd video, im assuming uploaded to a web streaming service (Or do you have a direct feed video no one else has?), via your 480p gamepad, and saying you see jaggies on THAT as proof?

Is that what is happening here? I cant quite tell exactly what you are trying to get at.

I will say I DO think the final game will be 720p/30.
And yeah you are right, there definately WERE High res images of skyward sword, AND twilight princess. These were never really an issue back then though though because we KNEW they were prettied up, as the knew the console couldnt output at that resolution.

And I am fine with that. 720p can have great image quality with good AA on a TV you sit a couple feet away from.

Looking at what nintendos been doing in past games, where their AA works, particularly where it doesnt, and a related group of special effects Nintendo games have been doing increasingly well: Depth of feild and motion blur... I think I can see what they are working on to get these AA results... I think its a good fit for low latency edram.

I swear, I hope there is NO loading times throughout the whole game. Like, if you go in a dungeon, it goes right in and blends with your movement.

I would imagine dungeons would be the only time the system loads. I bet the load is masked by dramatically descending the stairs into the dungeon like skyward sword did (was an homage to original zeldas).

But if it doesnt even then? I will be even more impressed.

But would Nintendo really risk making Link a girl? Unless they have decided to go down the RPG route and let you choose your gender?

I do see where you are coming from but I think it may just be the art-style that makes him look quite feminine. It looks very anime-esque and I feel that anime has a tendency to make male characters look quite feminine.

It will be very interesting (and strange) if it is a girl though.

What risk?

Its not art style that makes me think this one is female. Its Anatomy. Humans are sexually dimorphic. They are very different in skeletal and muscle structure, its not just boobs and dangly bits, or pretty faces. Ive never looked at a link before and had any question of the gender despite the pretty face because of this (windwaker excluded, as at that age physical gender is irrelevant to body structure). Link has a masculine body structure.

From my experience in college art classes, particularly the classical arts anatomy and physiology of the human form. (Drawing naked people YAY! Of all body types.... and ALL ranges of (adult) ages. ALL. AAAALLLLLLLLLL AAAAAGGGGEEEESSSSS.)

iBobnp6L803Gi.jpg

This stands out strongly as a female back. from the shoulders, the scapula, down to the waste, very feminine in muscle structure. And yes, believe you me when they designed this character, and ANY character they do indeed have skeletons, and muscle structure as part of their design. As well as nude (but probably genitaless) design sheets in concept art to show off that muscle structure for people to understand how the character is formed. Yes, even in fictional characters that do not have realistic art styles. Egads if those ever got out...

iYYL5But14Pql.png
And this is a feminine neck and shoulder structure.

Im not just looking at the face, and judging from the enlarged eyes and slimmed jaw... If this is still a male, It will be the first time they went past making just the face androgynous. WHich they could also do. Maybe this time the hero is hermaphrodyte!

I honestly wouldnt be surprised if Nintendo tried later to reveal this as a surprise.

Any other Link design, would have taken me by surprise if they tried to pass it off later as female. This ones body structure stands out very strongly as female to me.

That may be your opinion but its certainly not mine. The tech demo blows away the actual art style both from a technical and an art style point of view. Regardless from an art style only point of view the tech demo is a better option in this day and age in my opinion. Maybe during the days of the GameCube they had to go with that kind of art style out of necessity but its not necessary now. At the end of the day its my personal preference whether you and others agree with it or not. The hardcore gamer may be able to accept this art style but if Nintendo is to reach the masses they really need to use the tech demo art style to pull in all those other gamers.

Heres your problem. You are trying to argue your opinion, on a subject comprised of facts.

Is the tech demos pathetic low poly tiny room more technically impressive than the actual games seamless gigantic open world? Where you can go anywhere you see? Every square inch of which is completely covered in dense grass, with each blade individually lit and shaded in real time?

How about the pathetically rigged tech demo link with ceramic doll face? How about the fact the actual game characters face has more animation points in her face than the entire tech demos link? Hell, the damn ARROW has more animation points than tech demo link.

How about all the shepards and goats in the fields reacting in real time to the monster? Oh wait, there WAS no other characters in the tech demo.

How about the fact the in game monster has more polygons and animation points in one arm than the entire ghoma model from the tech demo?

How about how it PERFECTLY reacts dynamically to uneven surfaces where tech demo goma has to be put on entirely flat ground?

How about the high speed cross country chase, while tech demo ghoma simply rotates in the same place?

You can have your opinion. Thats all it is. But it cant stand up to the facts.

The actual game obliterates the tech demo on every level except irritating adolescent 'gritty realism is teh matures!'

By risk I meant that there is a chance they may alienate some of their fanbase.

You do make a very convincing argument though, the body shape does seem to suggest female.

Well, they could probably get those ones back by making her a lesbian.

But honestly, as long as the game is awesome, I really dont think anyone who is a fan of Zelda and not just an... whatever... will have a problem if a Zelda comes out with a female Hero.

Honestly, I think the calibur of the game will be what colors their perceptions of the gender of the protagonist. Whether they conciously realize it or not.

Even Xenoblade Chronicles X has a loading time when you enter a city, or perhaps it was loading the cutscene?
http://youtu.be/RwgVanoq_a4?t=39m15s
Either way, it was a short loading screen. Also, have you seen this footage of it? IT LOOKS FRIKKIN INCREDIBLE.

That was just for the cutscene. ANd it wasnt even a loading screen.

Xenoblade chronicles X has no loading screens anywhere ever while playing the game.

Like xenoblades colony 9, you will be able to simply walk from the mountains/lakes, into the gates of the city without a loading screen.

Thats wasnt loading the city, it was loading the scripted events, voice files, camera scriptings etc..
After that cutscene you will be able to freely enter and leave the city at will, and seamlessly.

If this is actually gameplay, and not a misunderstanding, Nintendo has seriously stepped up their Anti aliasing.

I also just noticed that it is probably not Epona in the trailer either, Epona usually has a white mane.

No sword
Possibly female

Not riding Epona

I have so many questions which will probably not be answered until 2015.

yeah, eponas always had a white mane.

Well we at least know it's in-game, running on Wii U... So even if it is a cutscene, the AA still counts, right?

There's also been a few 1080p screenshots released, but a few skepticists claim it's impossible to pull off on Wii U due to a near complete lack of aliasing. Nintendo hasn't been releasing fake screens for previous Wii U titles, but nobody knows if these are legit at this point.

Well there is ONE thing about Zelda thats different from the other nintendo games with the aliasing.

Its 30fps instead of 60.

Blows the tech demo out of the water, and will still look gorgeous decades from now, When the legend of Zelda, Holy shiznets of the open world 4K is re-released on the Wii R.

Obviously there has to a border.

But when you get to the mountains will we be able to climb them?

For example most games use a mountain range to form as border so you can't enter an area until you pass dungeon, get gate key etc.

Always wanted to just climb over LOL.

Heh, windwaker just told you no.

I am pretty sure that didn't happen.

It absolutely did. Twilight princess as well. Nobody really made a big eal out of it though, because we all KNEW they were high resolution so we could get a better look at the world, as we all KNEW the wii could only do 480p.

It wasn't what I was expecting. I do like the art style and it does look beautiful but certainly not awesome or amazing by any means. Personally I was hoping for the style represented in the tech demo which would have been far more in keeping with today's technology. The tech demo does in my opinion look far better them the style they have chosen. That said I love Zelda and will buy this game on day one no matter what. What's really good to know is that its actually open world and not linear which makes for more fun exploration.

The actual game we got, not even considering the art style, technically and graphically rainbows on the tech demo from orbit.

Tech demo should be embarrassed.
