#315892 Computer science or computer engineering

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 07 July 2015 - 06:19 PM in The Café

Ask yourself if you are more interested in hardware or software (also if you like intense math and the such). CS is all about the science involved with computers, programming, complex math, databases, networking, compiling code, and beyond. CEN is more geared towards the design and implamentation of computers, like building computers, robotics, and etc.

Game designers are usually CS dropouts or people who don't go all the way in the field. Hence the "Science" part.

if I do CS do I get to learn about computer hardware???

#306426 Nvidia unveils The Tegra X1

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 05 January 2015 - 03:30 AM in General Gaming

New year can never start in a better way than this. Nvidia revealing a brand new processor ; The octa -core Tegra X1. X1 will be the successor of the famous Tegra K1 and will have nearly double the performance of its predecessor. X1 will also be the first ever mobile processor to reach a computational power of a teraflop with a fraction of power of that of a core i7. The first processor to hit a Tera-flop did it back in 2000 and required nearly a million watts to do it.

The major feature of the X1 is that it has 256 Maxwell shader cores + it has CUDA support which makes it great for parallel computing and gaming. Nvidia is aiming that it's processor can leap over the Quallacoms upcoming snapdragon 810 performance both in terms of general and graphical computing.

Here are the specs of the X1:

265 Maxwell Shader Cores

8 CPU core( 4 cortex A57+4 Cortex A53)

60FPS 4K (H.265, H264, VP9)

support for 1.3 GigaPixel camera support

20nm Node

As indicated above, the Tegra X1 CPU will be based Big little architecture which means that 4 A57 cores will be used for intensive computing while 4 cortex A53 cores for light computing.

One of the big features of the X1 is its support for 60fps 4k Video at 60hz which means we can finally enjoy lag free experience when watching 4K .

One of the biggest features of the X1 is its power efficiency, its nearly double that of the K1 which can primarily be linked to the fact that it has a smaller node of 20nm compared to 28 nm of the K1. This means that we can finally see it on our smart phones.

It seems that mobile gaming is finally catching up with home consoles and in the next couple of years we might see our smart phones and tablets surpassing the graphical capabilities of our next gen consoles.

#305933 If nintendo uses X86 on their next console, will you buy it?

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 24 December 2014 - 01:43 AM in Wii U Hardware

A development architecture is not the same thing as hardware architecture. ppc IS the current hardware architecture for Nintendo's systems since gamecube, so retaining ppc would mean technical backwards compatability back to gamecube.

As if right now, the 3ds, and wii u have vastly different development environments, they are completely different environments to program and create games in. It would be like having to use two different languages for each console. People who have mastered 3ds development know nothing about wii u development and visa versa. Having a unified development architecture just mens they will be using the same 'language' for both systems.

Putting Nintendo games on android and ios is idiotic and company destroying. The android/ios and now even steam audience has completely devauled gaming, to the point they wont even spend 5 bucks on a brilliant game. Not only would Nintendo completely devalue its own hardware by releasing its content on phones instead of or along side Nintendo hardware, but they would make a fraction of the money with even millions of 'sales' that they would with couple thousand k of 40-60 dollar games.

It seems you mis understood my last part about android and ios. I meant that developers would port some of their android and ios games to wii u not the opposit   because as you said  even with million of sales they wouldn't be profitable.

here is question that has been bothering me for so long, how can xbox one and ps4 which are running an X86 chip with 28nm node use more power than wii u CPU that is based on 65nm node?

#305902 If nintendo uses X86 on their next console, will you buy it?

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 23 December 2014 - 03:43 PM in Wii U Hardware

Well, I was only talking about the ppc cpu, so a lot of that equation would be dependant on what GPU Nintendo decided to pair it with.

A wii u handheld could be tough, although the ppc 750 is a low power drawing processor for a plugged in system, it certainly isn't a sub-watt processor the likes of ARM products that go into mobile devices. It would depend on how low that power draw can get on that shrunken node per core, and at what clock speeds.

When Nintendo says architecture im not so sure they are talking about direct hardware architecture like using the same cpu processors for the handheld and consoles, but more a runtime architecture that can run the same code across both systems, which are stocked with similar api's and other run time libraries.

A unified development architecture, not necessarily the same hardware architecture.

This way, All next ds games could effortlessly run on wii next, easily upped in resolution and with sharper textures, better lighting, and better effects, and select wii next games would run on ds next systems with simple downscaling options. Obviously, the bigger, most impressive wii next games will be too much for a battery sipping portable, but big names that are simple enough cpu wise, like mario kart, party and smash, will be easy to have a portable version built to be downscale ready at the flip of a switch (Or the system flag of a boot). Even activating platform specific content for each game, all made by the same team during the same development cycle.

Making a game for ds next and wii next will be exactly the same code wise. Just one will be more powerful than another. No need for specialized wii u teams, and specialized 3ds teams, who excel on one platform but are inexperienced on the other.

This would be a huge boost in resource effeciency, and greatly aid Nintendo in increasing the speed of content creation while mantaining quality. It will directly address game shortages Nintendo faces Whether or not 3rd parties decide to stop being Nintendo phobic.

To answer your Nintendos next console question, I think it will likely be a little more powerful than ps4/xbone, its next ds will likely be around as, or a little more powerful than the vita, although the resolution may not be as high as the vita's.

If it is going to be the same development architecture then that is great  but wouldn't diffrent hardware architectures cause a problem interms of backwards compatability?

I think if nintendo would switch to a new architecture then it should be ARM (as you said) ARM means a more power efficient  system. it also means that it will be much easier to port small games like those on android  and ios . Having both the next ds and the next wii run arm means that games can be ported easily and we might finally have console games running on handheld.

#305867 If nintendo uses X86 on their next console, will you buy it?

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 23 December 2014 - 07:52 AM in Wii U Hardware

I'm not sure that the next console will have backwards compatibility. Not only because there's still the risk of selling less than GC but also because in terms of retail games, the 2 libraries just don't compare.

A GC user would naturally carry a lot of GC games to the Wii, at the end of GC's life, but given that Wii U's support is so low, i don't think it would justify raising the costs of the HW.

Iwata already said that they plan to use an architecture similar to Wii U's. If that is possible or not with a x86 architecture, i have no idea.
But whatever architecture they decide to use, it won't matter for 3rd party relationships.
When Nintendo had a better architecture with the GC, in comparison with the PS2, it still didn't get them the best of the best 3rd party games.

Developers will always go where the market for their games is.
If Nintendo decides that they need more genres like racers, shooters, adventure games, etc. - all those games/genres that gamers love to pay - then gamers will come and that will show developers have a market for them to make money on.

If what you said is true then they are going to use RISC architecture which means that they are not going to use x86.  :D

Am I allowed to post how dumb it is to buy a console based on architecture?

Its not dumb, I didn't get an xbox one untill mid 2014 because all my 154 xbox 360 games wont work with the new system. compared to my wii u and xbox 360

#305858 If nintendo uses X86 on their next console, will you buy it?

I wont  because If that happens , the next console will just be a PC which will be stupid .further more, It will not be backwards compatible with current Wii U games.

What do you think ? do you support switching to X86 or not?

I loved you WydrA, why do you hurt me so much?

I wasn't talking about the pricing, yes DDR4 is expensive but PC users do use it.

Here is the thing DDR4 has been available in 2014 here are the reasons

1. There wasnt any supporting motherboard

2.Their cost of production is very high

3.As far as I know only intel's haswell-E have DDR4 controllers. AMD will be including them in their upcoming Bulldozer Architecture which is running on both Carrizo and Carrizo L.

I'm not sad about that, I sad that if they make a good game one platform won't be able to enjoy it. Anyway not a lot of indies on console is actually a great thing(So you can search for the gems in the dirt more easier) but it's when the good ones that miss a platform, it sucks.

PC users alternate between DDR4,GDDR5 or DDR3. Pc will never have a set spec list or part, also the reason why X1 was running 950p is due to optimization and I don't blame Sledgehammer for it.

small correction here
DDR4 is very expensive, and when they tested the 5550 they were probably running on DDR3
GDDR5 is a graphics memory which as far as I know is dedicated to graphics cards only.

#304021 Available To Play Feature - Smash and Other Titles

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 27 November 2014 - 12:19 PM in Wii U Games and Software

The online is really limited when not playing with friends :/

I will be honest, I have been struggling to play MK8 online this week due to server issues , so i hope they fix it

#303944 Available To Play Feature - Smash and Other Titles

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 26 November 2014 - 05:50 AM in Wii U Games and Software

So, with Smash Bros, if you are viewing your friends list and they are playing online there will be an "Available to Play" notice right in your friends list, which you can use to join your friend quickly.

This is a similar feature which was in the 3DS. Is this now supported for all online games? I noticed this worked for Watch Dogs as well. Do the games need to support this, or is it OS based?

This small feature would be very handy for MK8

Finally !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nintendo has been doing a great job recently to improve its online services.

#303826 What do you want (or expect) the next home console to be?

Posted by Mahmoodinho98 on 24 November 2014 - 08:59 AM in Wii U Hardware

Could you clarify why 3-4 Gigs of esram? That seems very excessive, costly, and not even efficient. That's a huge jump from what is there now.

I might have over exagurated but considering AMD is releasing its next GPU with 4gb of esram (they call it HBM( high bandwith Memory) so I was thinking, 4 years from now there would be a complete evolution in GPU technology , why not implement it? about the cost, as i said earlier, over the next 3-4 years I expect most GPUs to be running atleast 1gb of esram so I guess the price would be cheaper.

1) ibm cpu 6 cores 12 threads @ 2.5ghz modern tech  4 or 6mb cache.   (ibm cpus normally have more threads per core, so 6/12 is not a big issue, its allready cut in half)

2) about 2.5 Tflops gpu with mantle support and dx12 features.  (this performance was 3-4 years ago in PC as a maximum per card) so 2.5 when wii U 2 comes, is nothing... it should be 3.

3) 16 gigs of ram, (ddr4) which 2 of them are GDDR5 (graphics memory) -  DDR4 is extremly expensive now, but in a year it will fall about 50% down.  It will be the standard, as ddr3 is today.

basic model comes with 120-200gigs of HDD and the nintendo patent of bluray discs.

I believe this package will outperform the competitors and 3rd support wont be able to complain.

Hopefully by the next gen  Wii U can atleast do 3.5-4 terflops since current high end GPUs can reach 12 teraflops

Here is what I want from nintendo next home system

1. specs

1080p gamepad and support for 2 gamepads and 4 pro controllers

2.Improvments

better gamepad battery life

ability to install your own hardrive

A much much mcuh improved online service+ game streaming
