Pick up your Wii. Take the stupid stand off, and look at the bottom. There's a little hatch that is closed through a screw. Remember that.

The Wii's install base is trucking huge. This makes it hard for Nintendo to get these people to buy a brand-new box, especially in a hard economy. If said box cost a lot, your soccer-mom Wii crowd might not (read: won't) understand why a perfectly working Wii needs to be replaced.

So, here's my idea: it's dubbed the "Wii+" or "Wii Plus". This is an add-on that attaches to the bottom of the Wii (using this expansion port) and replaces the stand. Inside the new stand/attachment are things to make the Wii much more powerful-moar RAM, built-in Ethernet (to further encourage online connectivity), a new graphics chip, maybe a new CPU, and possibly a hard drive (anywhere from 20 to 60 GB, and could allow for game backups). It builds on top of what the Wii already has to make it a moar powerful console, maybe 360-caliber. The Wii+ also has a new OS, which runs instead of the Wii's proprietary OS, adding new features like improved online and better media (i.e. Hulu Plus and Netflix built-in).

This "Wii Plus" would retail for anywhere from $100 to $150, easily in the price range of the major Wii market.

What are your thoughts?

If Nintendo had plans for a Wii + attachment to increase the graphical capabilities of the Wii they'd already of released it by now. Nintendo has done similar things with previous consoles, but I doubt Nintendo ever planned for such a device this generation as many of the past examples where failures and it wouldn't benefit the console in any way. Right now Nintendo needs to focus on their next generation console. Nintendo has quite the hurdle to overcome, but a new console simply is the only way forward.

The idea's neat - kinda reminds me of the Sega 32x - but I'm quite sure that the little hatch with the screw is just a cover for the Wii's clock's battery. Even if it was, in fact, an expansion port, I think Nintendo would have a bit of a hard time marketing it as a necessary upgrade to their system. They'll be, like, "Buy this attachment and get better graphics out of your Wii!" Many hardcore fans will jump on it, but most casual gamers (which form the majority of the demographic of Wii owners) either won't know, won't care, or will think their existing graphics are "good enough."

So basically there would be games that have a little Wii+ sticker and these games can only be played with the stand. People would be pizzled off if that happened  . They would be asking questions like why couldn't they have just built it like that in the first place. Its like selling you an empty box of chocolates and then you buying the chocolates to fill it up (stupid analogy).

All these awesome looking games would have the Wii+ sticker and the normal Wii games would fall by the wayside. Who would make a Wii game if they can make a Wii+ game with awesome graphics?

Not sure about this... I would find it hard to explain to very casual gamers like my mum a stand that makes the Wii slightly better than I would a whole new console.

It's a good idea, but I don't think it would work. A whole new system, in my opinion would attract a larger amount of customers.

sounds like a good idea
but what I would like would be a built in camera then they could incorporate that into games and maybe a few more things like controllerless like the xbox kinect only easier to use and can be used in any space. They could use the built in camera to do that. Brilliant
