It seems to me we do have conflicting ideas of what Nintendo should and will do for the next console, and I figure a poll would make it easier to see what the consensus is.

Some people (like me) are convinced that Nintendo simply needs to make some improvements to the hardware where needed, but mostly make it a little cheaper and focus on good games to sell the system. Others, however, thinks Nintendo should be in the lead of the graphics rat race, which will make all the third partys bow down and customer open their wallets and make it rain.

Where do you sit?

Nintendo once knew how to offer serious power at an affordable price.

Might be necessary to dedicate hardcore hardware guys to the console so the software guys can keep focus on producing 100% quality, fulfilling games.

Iwata and Miyamoto should not dictate hardware specs. They can add to needed hardware features, but not u specs such as hardware limiting factors.

Even if nintendo themselves don't use 100% of the power in order to keep DEV costs low, at least it's there for the companies with business models that allow them to pour on the dev resources.

To have not only nintendo titles, but also the definitive third party versions of those games on the same console... It would be quite the coup.

But it makes too much sense. So they won't do it.

But they should.

It's a new market. And specs (and thus ultimate potential for games) play a major role.

They gotta start over and leave the backwards play behind. It's slowing them down in terms of what a new system can be.

The same thing happen with playstation. They left the backwards play to force more on the next gen.

But nintendo needs to get there spec up. They are normally the first one out the gate with new systems. And then ms and Sony looks at there specs and say oh I'll doubt that and we will win.

Nintendo needs to listen to there customers and stop all this kiddy stuff.
That holds them back way to much. Everyone thinks the wii systems are just for little kids. And some or the games are and they just don't show off the teen and adult games. Which is where the money is.
Little kids don't have money. So they can't buy s games or systems.
But if you show off a bad ass me trio that's is rated teen. Then the will get the older people to buy the system.

It will have to have a better and new GUI. (I'm sorry but I'm tired of the 3ds, wii,wii u look ).

Better online play.
Better eshop. (The wii u one is ok but can improve alot)
Every game made would need to support a normal controller. Alot of people don't like using the game pad all the time (I like it even tho devs don't do anything special with it)

Humm mmmm

Price range would probably be close to the $400 to $500 range.

And they need to change very little for nes, snes, gba games. I think if they charged only $1 or .99c that those games would move very fast and they will get more sells.

That's about all I can think off.

It needs to have around the same power as the next PS and Xbox consoles. Also, Nintendo HAS to make a really good impression to get PS and Xbox fans to buy the console. I recommend paying certain companies to work on games exclusively for Nintendo's next system. They NEED to announce those games when they announce the system. These games could include Half-Life 3, the next Fallout, a new Metroid, Zelda, open-world Mario etc. They need to be games that they MOVE systems.

  • Nintendo needs to drop the Wii name, we've seen how detrimental it was to the Wii U (plenty of people still don't know what the Wii U is, "is it a new console or an accessory?").
  • Keep it cheap, the mass market does not like shilling out tons of money for a new system. Take notes from the original Wii, it was cheap and came with a great party game that people continue to play even to this day.
  • Design the system around the kind of games you plan to bring to it. With the Wii U, there's been virtually no interesting use for the GamePad because Nintendo kept saying "we'll eventually get interesting ideas with it." Make your launch games the perfect examples of why this new technology is the future, similar to what Wii Sports did for the Wii Remote.
  • New IPs. It's already obvious that Mario's face can no longer sell an entire system, even with a 2D Mario game. We need new games that don't feel like retreads of old ground or else people won't see a reason to upgrade. Look at the Wii U, basically all the games on it (while a lot of them are actually quite good) are sequels that aren't breaking any new ground. Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (love this game, but it's nothing brand new), Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Bros U, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Pikmin 3 and more are all just sequels that don't use the GamePad in new enough ways to make them must-have exclusives.
  • Have an account system... dear god, have an account system. The Wii U's virtual console is a mess because not only are there not even a quarter of the games from the Wii's virtual console, but in order to play them on the system I have to re-buy them. When I buy a game from Nintendo, I want to be able own it for every system currently and beyond. Why should I re-buy a game just to play it on the 3DS, can't I just have it solidified onto my account forever? Sure, you can transfer you're old games onto the Wii U, but you have to go through the long process of going to Wii Mode just to play them, and then you can even use the new features like Restore Points and playing on the GamePad.

I do like the Wii U because it actually has a lot of enjoyable games, but a lot of that stems from the fact that I'm a big Nintendo fan. Obviously I'm going to like the games whether or not they're sequels or remakes because I love their games, but in order for Nintendo to reach mass market success like with the Wii, they're going to need to bring completely new experiences we haven't see on other systems. That doesn't mean getting rid of Mario, Zelda, and all their other franchises, it just means making new games for them that explore new ideas never before seen.

^ yes times a million.

they need to drop the wii name. But they wont. I will probably be called "the new wii u" just like the 3ds.

I truly think the should of called the New 3ds "Super 3ds"

But the next Nintendo system should have a brand new name. and the main first party games should be rolling out at lest 1 pre 6months.  metriod, mario, zelda, smash bro, mario party etc....

I can pretty much guarantee the Wii name will not be used in a home console again.
Nintendo needs to pull out the stops next system. Build the power system. Bring back the "now your playing with power" campaign and simply call it the "nintendo Entertainment System" NES with a modern sleek UI without Mickey mouse audio cues.

The name will signify what it originally meant to do. Provide entertainment. Nowadays that includes all the apps that provide movies music Etc. in addition to the core game features. That's what NES means.

They don't have to name it NES. but something that captures that. Although it does provide the right type of nostalgia.

Anything with Wii in it just means...old and underpowered.

Build a system that's at least as powerful as the competition. Perhaps include some secret features (ie: SNES ) that can be activated s year later or so to gain the element of surprise on the competition and put a grin on console owners from ear to ear.

Market the thing as the ultimate system BEVAUSE THAYS FREAKIBG WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS.

Put on an E3 that starts off showing how bad Nintendo was in the past just like they did when announcing the Wii. That was the best e3 intro ever.

BUT...

Don't go the second half. You know, where they began to downplay specs Because the system was pathetically underpowered.

Instead BUILD on the intro by showing never before seen graphics in actual games with a dash of outrageous tech demo in between. Give them hype and reality. Build excitement.

Then... LAUNCH with three must have titles covering three popular genres.

Better yet, make 2 of those timed exclusives from the most popular third party exclusives.

i think the major 3rd parties are done on Wii U. I mean i just do not see it. It has to be exclusives though. They cant give us what they give the other two becuase we know it will not get the same attention. Look at sales on Zombi U on Wii U compared to the 2 assassin creed games... It has outsold both together. Nintendo needs EXCLUSIVES!

Right.

ON THE WII U.

That's why they have to build a next system that can't be ignored.

And makes the deals for timed exclusives with the big boy franchises.

Go big or go home.

You want Madden? COD? DESTINY 2? Final fantasy? Only on Nintendo. For a year or so.

Crazy? Maybe. Ambitiously reaching for greatness and firmly grasping it? You bet.

And what's better, if Nintendo actually builds the console that out powers the next gen efforts of the other guys, they've got it in the bag as their will literally be no reason to have an Xbox or playstation at that point.

As soon as they start to focus on the demographic where the money is, i.e. people who don't like high quality games, they have made themselves irrelevant. I mean, why would I buy a Nintendo system if the games are the same as on Playstation? They should listen less to what people claim they want, and instead make games that they themselves believe are great. But they need games like ZombiU, Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade X that they can't make themselves, and it would also be nice if there were a lot of more games to choose from. How are they going to accomplish this? We'll see, but even if it will be difficult to win the 3rd parties over, they should at least try to make the threshold to port a game over to the next Nintendo as low as possible, without compromising with their own ideas.

Im a little bit radical here but thats my way to go: Nintendo would 'nt get good 3rd party support even with a 20 Tflops GPU/16 core CPU and 12 GB 3DRam! I would give then the middlefinger and they can go to the other systems. Make like on the N64 a good 2nd party lineup and keep make good games only.

Yeah that will never happen. The publishers would ask for an insane amount of money and Nintendo would tell them to go screw themselves. Iwata has said they wont play the exclusive timed exclusives game with 3rd parties. So I agree more games like bayo, devils third, W101. Buy some smaller studios that they can grow with. They need to focus on offering the best gaming platform they can afford while making a profit. In terms of hardware make it as powerful as they can within a reasonable budget. Im ok with an upgraded gamepad setup.

With respect, your solution is already in motion with Wii U. And it's not helping.

That's the kind of defeatist mentality that agrees to die quietly. Nintendo needs CHANGE. But not for the sake of change. They need to reinvent. Rethink. Nintendo is a company ran by proud Japanese men. The problem with pride... Is it always goes before a fall. And it's been a downward spiral since 2009. That's a long time. Time to get bold and stop thinking about plugging holes in the cargo ship. Instead, build a destroyer to go out, take the cargo and put holes in the other guys' ships.

People said "that'll never happen" when Steve Jobs came back to rebuild a broke, sinking Apple.

Today? The largest company in the entire world, worth TWICE what the next largest company is.

It all started when a. Humble steve jobs approached he computing leader microsoft to invest in Apple and partner with MS Office back on Mac. Microsoft investing in Apple? "That will never happen..."

Now Apple could buy microsoft a couple of times over.

Because one solitary leader dared the people around him to boldly attempt great things.

It CAN happen for Nintendo.

But not if they live in the past or just do what the old codgers in charge now deem "safe."

Give a publisher an inch and they will try to take a mile. I think what I described is Nintendo not living in the past. People are still like Nintendo needs new ips but will overlook games like XCX and splatoon. The reality is people want Nintendo to be just like Sony and Microsoft. I took a lot of hate on this site from people because I said I wanted Nintendo to get GTAV. That wasnt because I was a big GTA fan. The reality is GTA is the biggest if not one of the biggest third party titles out there. It usually sell upward to twenty million copies per installment. I thought a well done GTA on Wii U launched beside the others could sell a million. Now the devide between Nintendo and third parties is too big. I am not sure what they have to do to ever be on top again but giving quality titles and partnering with studios for games like bayonetta and devils third can not be looked at as living in the past. Remember they is also the rumor from the guy that pretty much told us devils third was coming that they have three more partnerships like that in the works that havent been announced yet. Nintendo will IMO do a lot better next generation but some things like third parties will never be on the same level as sony or microsoft.

The reality is this: people like Nintendo games. But they also really like a lot of the third party offerings. Even the much maligned AAA titles. People are buying them because that's what they want. So make a machine that attracts the developers of those types of games. And in so doing, automatically giving Nintendo a better platform for their own games. No one is saying be the same as Sony and microsoft. But we are saying the policy of not even trying to compete is stupid. Not on,y can nintendo compete, they can win. They are the only gaming centric co panty between the three and are u i query positioned to ensure the success of their console standalone. It that success is limited when they go it alone. They need a steady flow of high quality 1st and 2nd party games as well as all of the third party offerings. In short, the one place anyone ever needs to go is Nintendo. Nintendo console at least as powerful as the competition, the stellar Nointendo game lineup, AAAAND the definitive versions of third party titles.

And stop, with the childish menu designs and sounds. The n64 wasn't like that. The gamecube wasn't like that. The SNES wasn't like that. Even the wii was actually cool looking for its time. The menus were Apple Mac inspired and looked very modern then.

But now, the UI is even less focused and borrows some of the same old design. But mixed with ther outdated elements that don't mesh well along with system sounds that can best be described as captain toad farting skittles out of his butt while jumping down a warp pipe.

That's great in a mario GAME or such. But not the entire ui.

Make it more neutral, allowing your experience to be defined by what games you Re playing and what apps you use. Nothing is more jarring than playing mass effect, arkham, or splinter cell, then jumping to the menu to watch a gritty movie on Netflix only to be greeted by happy skittle farts in between. In shorts, it's Annoying. No one wants to watch Giardians of the Galaxy on a Leapster right? So don't make the console sound like one. Something that could be at home on a child's room , a college dorm, as well as showing off your latest YouTube video to your upscale freinds at an oscars after party. And can be proud about it.

And when it comes to games, having the best audio visual experience never hurt anyone. In fact, this lone aspect is selling consoles for Sony quite well these days. Not saying Nintendo should be Sony. Quite the contrary. But the market is different than it was in the wii days and that won't change for quite some time.

Imo the UI design of WiiU is good. I like the Wara Wara Plaza and the big Channel Icons fit perfectly to the Touchscreen

I think Nintendo needs to focus more on courting the Indys. The AAA developers are - to put it nicely - have a corporate culture that is incompatible with Nintendo's. The Indy's on the other hand have fresh ideas and are usually more willing to try something different. Nintendo should be trying to convince these people to bring their games to the Wii U and 3DS. When The Wii first came out it sold like hotcakes because it was in a different category than the PS3 and Xbox 360 and was usually purchased alongside one of the other consoles. Nintendo should really try for that again. I'm not asking Nintendo to try to become the next PS4 or XBone because I don't really believe it is possible for Nintendo to cover all possible use-cases while still being an affordable high-quality product. I'll rather get my Nintendo console for Nintendo games and a PC for the rest.

Besides, why on earth would I want all of these PS4/XBone games on my Wii U when I can purchase them 75% off on Steam Sales?

All I want is something that they can create fun and interesting games on.  If it is better than nextbox and ps5 than that is great, if not I will not care. I have never and will never play 3rd party on Nintendo because that is what my PC is for, Ninty is for exclusives.  I just want them to have the best setup to make their untouchable games.

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

Here's what I want to see with the next hardware(s).

One Platform / Multiple Hardware Configurations - One software platform and ONE library. By this I mean any game can run on the console or handheld ect. Just spec'd different to the device (i.e better effects and higher res on console, portability on the other) This would in addition, free up dev teams in between big games to try new things, like come up with new properties or resurrect dormant IP.

Universal Accounts - Everything tied to your NNID and NOT the hardware. Games, DLC, VC, and everything else is easily accessible on any device. This is all pretty self-explanitory.

Backwards Compatibility - All 3ds and Wii U games playable. All Virtual Console and digital goods carry over with no extra charge or upgrade fee. Of course this would all depend on the controller interface for next gen, if they keep dual screens or not ect.

I would be happy if the next console was PS4+ level of power at a sub $300 price tag. Graphics alone don't impress me anymore but I expect it to be at least that powerful with the 4DS(?) at about Wii U level seeing as mobile tech has come a long way in the last few years.

I also honestly don't major third parties are EVER making a return to nintendo consoles again, at least not the western ones anyway. I think they're better off improving their relationships with indie devs and more home grown 3rd party support like they had on the N64 to offer more diversity in their lineups.
