Most people probably are thinking "Meh not surprised", but there is a particular reason why it doesn't for the Wii U (since the game will have it for PS3 and 360), and it's how voice chat is featured on the Wii U Gamepad. Sega basically stated because it's a launch title, there wasn't much developmental time to include it for the game, mainly because of how different it is. I'm not really sure what development needs to be done for this particular way.

I'm not going to pretend that this doesn't make me upset, not because of how voice chat is presented on the Gamepad, but because of Nintendo's silent treatment toward details until the last minute and it's affecting third-party supporters. Yea, I'm a Ninty fanboy in a way, but I'm getting a little pissed off at all the silence. Basically, the hype has worn off and I'm beginning to see light of different things.

And just so we're clear, I had no interest in the game, but it's mainly the principle of the matter. I'm sorry if seeing my opinion makes any of you upset, but I needed to vent out some way.

I wouldn't be surprised if the implementation of the mic on the upad is the exact same as wii speak worked.
There's little excuse in my mind since i'm taking this view, but i could easily be wrong so i'm not in a position to care strongly either way.

i agree the secrecy is borderline disrespectful and cocky and i rarely get angry with nintendo. but since SEGA did say that this is a "side effect of being a launch title" im not too worried

The secrecy was fine awhile ago, but we got less than a month away and it seems as though Nintendo is relying on its name to sell their new console rather than details. Buyers have a right to know everything of the product they are purchasing.

I agree the secrecy for the online for the Wii U is very bothersome.

here you have a OFFICIAL response from that game dev on neogaf

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=43474192&postcount=2

I've just commented on this over at Eurogamer. Bear in mind Voice chat is only supported by third party peripherals and then only on the GamePad. Given we felt only a select few players would therefore go buy said peripheral and it meant only one player being able to chat, we opted to spend the time and effort on features more players would enjoy.

We've hardly rushed it out, we've attempted to support as many WiiU specifics as we can via the 5 player splitscreen both off and online, WiiU specific game modes, Mii's with a unique vehicle and more.

You make these calls with a launch title as you don't know what kind of uptake a given feature has. Besides, lack of voice chat never hurt Mario Kart Wii eh? :P

You guys, I wouldn't complain about the launch titles too much. Now the later releases, such as Monster Hunter Ultimate, I would worry about. If Mario Kart Wii U doesn't have voice chat, that's a problem. That's not a problem for a launch game, the devs are getting used to the hardware.

I kinda got this bad feeling that Wii U's online may suck. Expect for miiverse.

Just because one game, especially that it's a third-party title, has no voice chat, doesn't mean the Wii U's online will suck.

C'mon, voice chat isn't that big of a deal. Sure, it's convenient in co-op online multiplayer, but lack of voice chat in an online single player game isn't a big deal.

Not just voice chat. But overall.

I really hope there is an account system.

There is! On the Wii U, you can have 12 accounts.

Thanks for sharing that, Storm. I guess I feel they should have known more about the hardware, but Nintendo is hush-hush on certain things.

My point isn't that voice chat is a big deal, but that it seems like developers have a lot of questions they don't have an answer to regarding the Wii U. This is important for maximum third-party support.

When people see that the PS3 and 360 version has voice chat, it's gonna make the Wii U version look bad no matter what the technicalities are.

Still getting this game.

As for Nintendo's marketing, whatever. Australia doesn't give enough screen time for video games anyway.

Trophy Cards are classy too! LOLZIGZAGOON

It's a launch title, so you have to cut them some slack. Plus it's just a racing game, games like CoD and Mass Effect are the ones that need ( and have) chat. Since they require teamwork, while racing is just everybody for them self. This whole mic controversy doesn't really affect me. As I don't have a mic and don't plan on buying one. I just like to play games online, chat would likely distract me.
