So earlier last week, my girlfriend was complaining she was getting a lot of game freezes while playing Mario and had to unplug the console to reset. Then I started getting hit by the freezes during COD and ZombiU more frequently. Finally, the freezing and beeping got so bad, I couldn't get passed the boot-up screen. And if I did happen to make it the main menu, it froze after making any menu choices.

Sent it into Nintendo to get it repaired since it was a gift and didn't have a receipt to do an exchange. Pretty disappointed as the console was just over a month old. What happened to you Nintendo :( My n64 is alive and kicking. I know there are always risks when buying first gen hardware but this a bit outrageous even for me. I'm considering selling off the refurbished one and waiting til they work out the kinks on their end.

Anybody else have to send it in for unplayable freezing? I've heard a lot this was a software bug, but I tried everything under the sun and failed.

My freezing issues are rare. It's not fair to blame Nintendo for receiving a faulty console. When I first received my N64, it wouldn't even boot up any games no matter what I did. Ended up having to buy a new one. It's not like electronics work flawlessly.

While I'll admit, this is the first generation I've ever been a day one buyer, to my understanding just about every system has had some bugs in the first shipment. It makes sense that such bugs would be more common in modern day systems, especially considering how much more complicated they are to past consoles. Besides, remember how long it took Microsoft to get the RRoD worked out? As long as it doesn't take that long I wouldn't be to worried.

I was one of the RROD victims but at least you were able to keep all of your save data, purchases, and online activity. I'm getting the feeling I'll lose everything on my new one. I never really cared that Nintendo decided to tie everything to each single console until now. Really wish they would have switched over to some kind of account/cloud model like Microsoft and Sony. I know it's not the biggest deal to lose all my achievements and save progress, but as a product that was designed to play games and cost a good chunk of change, I'm pretty disappointed.

For my own preparation in the future, are you able to save everything to an external HD that will be compatible with another Wii U? If it ever decides to kick the bucket again, I would like to have everything backed up.

Buy a wii u at bestbuy, photocopy the receipt return it, profit.

As I understand it, bestbuy have a great returns policy.

I assume you're American. If you're in Europe you should be able to do this at any store, just don't open the box.

I know that many stores check the serial number when you try to return an item.

Never happens here.

I had to return my 3DS to them a couple times, and I never lost any data off of that (granted my issues were with the shoulder buttons and circle pad, and not with much of the internal components). I'd say you'll be fine most likely.

I have mine sent in right now also. The power light was turning to a blinking red when I tried to turn it on. The best thing you can do is to just relax, and hope for the best.  :)

I bought my WiiU on release date, Hooked my system up to the TV, downloaded the super long update, I  then placed my game into the  WiiU only to find out it was a defective system. Luckily GameStop had an extra console which they exchanged for my defective one. My 2nd console sometimes freezes too, but only on Sonic All star Racing Transformed.

I guess Nintendo does this thing where one console is broken on launch.

First of all, when you are experiencing issues it's always best to contact Nintendo about them. Never just rush off to the store and simply exchange the hardware. You'll lose all your data (save files, NNID, downloads on the internal storage, etc.). Even if you don't care about data loss you're still covered under Nintendo's year warranty. Any issue that needs repair is free (unless you caused the damage).

Second, this isn't really Nintendo's fault. Sometimes hardware is faulty. This fact is simply an increasingly more common issue in our more technologically reliant lifestyles.

And last, I am very sorry to hear about the freeze issue you were experiencing. I maybe experienced two freezes since I brought my console home on launch day. None of them while playing a game.

Hey all,

Just an update in case anyone cared.I got my Wii U back from Nintendo last week. Turns out there was a hardware failure and was given a replacement console. Lost all of my save data :( New one is up and running pretty smooth so far. Also, was able to re-download everything from the eShop easily.

I'm keeping all my save data on an external HD this time around ;) Oh well, guess I will have to catch back up on everything from scratch.

So let it be known that freezing/gamepad beeping is not strictly a software problem.
