So a game called Game Dev Tycoon was released, and it allows you to start a video game company in the 80's and work your way through the market without going bankrupt. It mostly follows real events: they have knock-off names for Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Sony, etc. It's an interesting game, but the best part is what they did about anti-piracy. To send a message to people, they released a "cracked" version of the game for free on Pirate Bay, and an authentic one on their website. The cracked version was identical except for one thing: after a few hours you will find out that people are pirating your game, and it will lead to your downfall. After that, any game that is well recieved will be pirated, resulting in low sales.

But that's not the best part. People who pirated the game have been going on their website saying, "after a few hours it says all of my games are being pirated! What's wrong with it?" and, "It's ruining my company!" This is probably the best anti-piracy measure I have ever seen in a game. What do you think about it, and what is your favorite anti-piracy measure that you've heard of?

The earthbound one was the best. I mean DELETING THE WHOLE PROGRESS at the final battle? Genius.

They should have a jumpscare if someone pirates a game. That would be the biggest comeback. Hope someone did that.

Not to mention it also made the game ball-crushingly difficult by making enemies spawn every 5 seconds.

The number of buyers will probably increase due to them releasing a "cracked" copy though, as it acts as a demo.

And with this bit of news, I'm sure even more people will buy it.

So they used more money to make an extra fake game to teach the pirates a lesson? But their real game will still get pirated, and the fake one will be eventually identified and taken out of the pirate circulation. It's witty, sure, but it's also on par with the movie companies argument that it's the little guy that gets hurt when you pirate a movie.

It was the exact same game, just with an anti-piracy detection. They released it for free on pirate bay and an $8 one on their website.

Ah, I was wondering how much it was, since their website crashed with all the sudden publicity. Not bad.

I actually did this, just wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the pirating measures etc., and fell in love with the game. Bought the legit one a few days later :)

-Alan Wake: If a pirated copy is detected it gives the protagonist an eye patch and gives plenty of notice to buy the game.

-Serious Sam 3: Those with a pirated copy instantly had a giant pink/red scorpion appear in the level which was invincible and dealt pretty heavy damage making the game unplayable.

I know there are heaps more but i can't remember right now, oh well.
