New Super Mario Bros Art 27

We’ve seen our fair share of new Mario games over the past few years. It seems like every few months we’re getting an announcement for a new game in the New Super Mario Bros. series. Where games like Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy were smash announcements, it feels like the rapid release of new Mario games is becoming a distraction for other Nintendo franchise releases.

You can read about Nintendo’s thoughts on the slew of Mario games after the break:

In an interview with ShackNews, Nintendo defends their massive Mario release schedule.

Charlie Scibetta, the senior director of corporate communications of Nintendo of America, says:

“We think we’re putting out the right number of Mario games based on what fans are asking for, based on what our own developers’ creative visions are. The key to that is as long as there’s innovation is occurring within the gameplay, as long as there’s new features, then marrying the characters and the IPs that people love is the right call from our standpoint.”

When questioned if consumers would prefer a new IP over Mario, Mr. Scibetta replied,

“You could call all the games that we’re making here new IP in the sense that they’re new gameplay experiences. They just happen to also have the IP that people associate with”

Where other companies make new franchises based on former mechanics, Nintendo appears to be taking new mechanics and placing them into former franchises. The question is, will this continue to be successful for Nintendo?
