Luigi

A friend of Wii U Blog, TealGameMaster, has given us a lovely review of New Super Luigi U, new DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U. It’s quite in depth and I recommend giving it a read if you’re interested in purchasing the game.

You can check out the review after the break:

This DLC is quite substantial in comparison to your ordinary DLC. In New Super Luigi U, the plot hasn’t changed…apart from the fact that Mario is mysteriously missing and all that remains is his hat… *shifts eyes* Anyway…You play as Luigi, Mario’s brother and the side characters are the two Toads as usual, but also to my surprise, Nabbit – that one guy you had a tough time catching in order to get a decent power! Nabbit works quite differently to what you’d expect. Nabbit is the player 2 of the game and can be chosen if you’re having a tough time…which, unless you’re some kind of god, I suspect you are, but we’ll get to that later. Nabbit can’t take any damage whatsoever. He’s completely invincible, however, this doesn’t mean he’s not affected by Pits or lava streams, that’ll kill him, but the enemies won’t hurt him.
Earlier I mentioned that you’d be struggling unless you’re some kind of god…yeah…let’s talk about THAT for a bit. Every level in the game has changed. You have 100 seconds to clear each level (with the exception of bosses which give you an extra 100 seconds at the boss door) and they’re all pretty hard, not that that’s a bad thing.
When you start the game you can feel the difficulty right from the word “start” and you will suffer…in a good way. If you’re the type of person who likes to find all the secret exits and get all the coins…good luck with that! The secret exits are ingeniusly/unfairly hidden throughout the game. You’ll definitely be searching for a while…unless you get lucky…in which case, well done! Every level has a well hidden pose of Luigi somewhere, whether it’s carved out of a bush, or it’s blocks shaped out as Luigi or an 8-bit cave painting, you’ll see him somewhere throughout the level…apart from, you know, obviously playing as him.
You really get the feeling they care for Luigi in his own spectacular year, and that’s fantastic!
I’d also like to add that the level design is superb! I really enjoyed New Super Mario Bros U for its design and thought they had a lot of really interesting level gimmicks! This is no exception!

Overall, I’d rate this DLC a 9 out of 10!
It’s much tougher than your average Mario game (even though it’s a Luigi game) and every level is brilliantly designed to bring you hours of fun! I highly reccomend buying the DLC or the actual retail copy (if you don’t have New Super Mario Bros U already) on August 25th (or July 26th for UK)!
Hope you have fun!

Just a quick add-on: If you want to buy the DLC here’s what you do (because I couldn’t figure it out for a few minutes). You have to go into New Super Mario Bros U before buying the DLC because there’s an update to accomidate for the DLC, which makes sense, but it didn’t occur to me. When you go to buy it, if you haven’t updated it, it says something along the lines of “This software needs an update” which I took to mean, the Wii U, not the game itself. Just a small bit of advice in case you have a problem buying it.
