Me and my gf were discussing what classifies an RPG and I wanted to see you guys' input on it. I think an RPG is a game with a story not set in stone that has multiple endings depending on what choices(or actions) you do. Games with light/ dark stat's usually are RPGs. Games with you being involved in stats or moves are not RPGs in my opinion. So that means that final fantasy and pokemon are not RPGs in my mind, but games like Fallout, Drakengard, or Bioshock are RPGs

What's the definition of RPG? A game that is played around a table with several other people and usually involves stats and dice-rolls, or, if taken to the next level, through use of items such as nerf swords, which would be the case in things like LARPing.

...In Video games, however, RPG refers to a game system that has elements of, if not completely taken from, Dungeons and Dragons, with games like Dragon Quest simply having similar battle systems, to games like Final Fantasy which took the entire bestiary directly from D&D.

By your definition, btw, both Umineko, Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night are RPGs. This is completely untrue.

I don't think RPGs need multiple endings to be considered as such they are just one type of RPG an open ended RPG. An RPG to me is a game that has well developed characters and story, focuses on stats, levelling up, items iventories etc. And is of a pretty decent length.

I think an RPG is an RPG.

R=Role
P=Play
G=Game

An RPG can be any kind of game in which you assume the role/"play" any person.

It can be from a guy with Keyblades, to a chosen one, to someone catching Pokemon, to whatever else you can think of!

But that's the thing, managing stats doesn't really make you have a role in the game, its just stat managing.

Stat-managing is one of the things that should be included in an rpg to make it an rpg though, if that makes sense.

But that's where I disagree.
Resident Evil has inventory management and pokemon has stats, but do those count as rpgs?
i don't believe so

Actually, pokemon IS an RPG... In fact, it uses elements from one of the earliest staples of the genre, Shin Megami Tensei. Which DOES have multiple endings.

I wasn't even sarcastic in my first post, btw. RPG was a genre long before video games came about, and the RPG video game genre is simply what a game is called when it is based on systems brought about by classic RPGs. It has nothing to do with plot, endings or character creation. At all. End of discussion.

hmm, then i'm thinking too literally :/
i'm thinking of the role you play in a game and you're thinking of the actual roots
