Even the gamecube was capable with 3D TV's, the feature was just never used.
If Nintendo had made Mario Galaxy 3, there would be so many people complaining about Nintendo recycling their franchises, of course those fans will later go on to buy the 18th installment of your typical generic shooter/racer/etc.
I think Mario World 3D will be a lot of fun but it probably won't attract fans like galaxy did, Nintendo needs to advertise it (if they ever get to it).

Is making a game 3D compatible really worthwhile? I don't know how much extra time/money it would take (if any) but generally 3D TVs are pretty unpopular at the moment. Maybe when they introduce glasses-free 3D TV people will have more interest in them.
