Wait, wasn't there an article somewhere that before a retail price and tax etc gets added on, that the Wii including profit for Nintendo would be around $180? That's about £115 add VAT, and some profit for retailers. That looks like around £199.99 - £229.99. My guess (as we get screwed on price) is $249.99 retail price in the U.S. The exact cost of the Wii on launch, somewhere I remember Nintendo saying that they would no longer sell a console for any more than $250

Looks like £250 is a real possibility in the UK so probably $280-300 stateside. I may actually buy at launch if its £250 or less.

I wonder if Foxconn have started manufacturing them yet? If they haven't already it will be soon if Nintendo are expecting big launch numbers.

I think $349 will be the minimum, considering the system power, the gamepad, and the R&D that went into it.

That's a great deal for this console. It's high end equipment. And $350 is affordable. Nintendo "could" possibly sell it at $299 if they made zero profit or even took a loss. $349 buys a great Christmas gift.

A $299 price tag will eliminate any and all barrier to entry.

For a games platform such as the Wii U, which looks poised to create strong software tie-in, it won't matter.

Nintendo knows that need to offer lots of power for a low price, like they did with the 3DS. they may not profit for a year on the hardware, but subsequent years will be different.

It's hard to see Nintendo missing out on profit from it's hardware, but they may do so if they feel they havent' generated a strong enough marketing "buzz"

Price it too high and it just won't sell (PS3 anyone?). but it there is one thing the previosu generation has taught us, it is that console prices go up every generation and people are willing to pay more to get more.

The original Wii with dirt cheap tech started out at $249. The much more ambitious and forward looking Wii U starting out at $349 is a great bargain for a system of this power level and capabilities.

The "proper" Xbox 360, without motion controls or a screen enabled GamePad, cost $399 to purchase at launch.

Even the bare bones, no hard drive, crippled version was $299.

So a next generation system, in 2012, launching at $349 with next level power, a Gamepad with relatively large additional screen and free online capabilities is quite the bargain. Normally, I would have expected a $399 price tag, but Nintendo is wanting to deliver high end power at an affordable price. This is a long way from 2005 and $349 is affordable. Microsoft and Sony provably won't be under that price either. And a year or two down the road, I can see a price drop to $299 in order to combat the new console launches.

Again, Nintendo CAN release at $299 to ensure a quick install base and entrench the system. but they won't profit on the hardware for about a year if they do so. And that is something they've only changed stance on once. If they can, I would love to see it. just not expecting it. it's not like they haven't earned their money here.

I am bracing myself for a US price of up to $350, but I am hoping for something around $300. All the reasons given that I have read are valid ,but I am just hoping that the price will not be too much more than a current PS3/360.

well they have done a werid number like $170 for the 3DS so maybe $325

I am beyond shock that most of you are confident with these predictions... Nintendo wont make any profit till the end of this year, they cant mess around at this point . The 3DS   at $250 was a failure resulting in a price cut. Nintendo said the price of the Wii U will be reasonable, but we as consumers know its price point will  have to compete with the EXPECTED price cuts of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

If this console Is anymore then $300 one way or another Nintendo will be in trouble financially so you truly think that Sony and Microsoft are going to sit there and let Nintendo make all the sales??? The answer to that is a definite NO.

Clearly if the wii u can demonstrate its superior to PS3 and 360 it can sell above their prices even with a small software catalogue in comparison. I feel people are a bit bored on the current models anyway and are looking for something new. The wii u package looks pretty good to me. I still don't know where the wii u will sit in power though because Nintendo won't release the specification so we are all trying to filter the limited information we are getting and make sense of it.

$300 seems like the most reasonable. I think it could be anywhere from $250 to $400 though, but I would probably place bets on $300.

Seeing as how Wii was $250 at launch, the motion technology was new at the time, and everyone was crazed over it for the next few years. 6 years later, the advancements in power might make the technology in Wii U just a little more expensive as Wii was 6 years ago. Touch screens are really that expensive either. Although $300 is my guess, $250 is definitely a possibility.
