OK I currently have my wii u set up to my computer monitor via hdmi. However, my monitor only outputs it's spdif in 2ch stereo. My Logitech z5500 will do 2ch or 5.1ch over Toslink digital optical, digital coax, or even 6ch direct jacks (green, black, orange headphone jacks). Does anyone know how to get the hdmi signal from the wii u to split into something compatible with my sound system? So far I'm just using 2ch stereo and doubling it front and back but it leaves my center and sub just sitting there.

It can be done but its not exactly cheap. http://www.ebay.com/...=item35bf2988a8

Personally I would put that money toward a new surround system that DOES support HDMI natively.

I would, except that the z5500 is hands down the clearest and most powerful system I have ever found for computers. Logitech has never matched it in it's later models and creative doesn't come close. Used versions sell for more than I paid for mine brand new.

That depends. If your computer has HDMI out then a dedicated surround sound receiver and 5.1 speakers will give you a far better sound output.

a full home theater system might have better sound if it's a high end brand, but the speakers that came with the z5500 are awesome and already paid for. They were the only speakers on the market that were THX certified when I bought them. $130 for the splitter is fine by me though, because I have multiple systems hooked up to this monitor fed through a mulit-in single-out HDMI switcher. My wii-u, my PC (which only outputs hdmi sound through the video card so not sure about that quality), and a PS3. The only system that won't hookup as surround for now is the wii u. the PS3 sends dolby digital through the toslink and my PC has the phone jacks on the back of the mobo.

I disagree that a home theatre system has to be high end to have better sound as that is definitely not the case. I have an entry level speaker system and a mid range surround sound receiver and it offers great sound. I can guarantee its better then your setup as I've experienced the z5500 before. If you're happy with the quality of the that then so be it as I certainly wouldn't be especially with my PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. I certainly wouldn't be happy with it with the PS4 and Xbox One which will replace my PS3 and Xbox 360 soon. That said I don't think there is practical solution in your case for the Wii U with the setup you have.
