Pokemon X and Pokemon Y is the 6th generation entry of Pokemon with a bucket list of improvements, new pokemon, characters, and finally jump its way into 3D on handheld.
X and Y have major improvements over the previous works that are very helpful and makes this experience more easy if you're a Pokemon veteran or new to the series. Here's the list on what they've done with this game:
- The game is alot more faster pased than the slow pased introductions of previous versions, but it tells the plot very early, like when you first get your gym badge it throws you in the plot and you'll be asking "When do I get my 2nd gym badge?"
- For the first time you can customize your player's look instead of a default boy or girl. white skinned, brown skinned, or blonde and blue eyes, you can also change their clothing and add accessories, even eye color if you can find the eye contacts through the game. And you can make your own 10 second video about what type of character you are in a full 3D model instead of the chibi look.
- You have these 4 friends that join your adventure, and they chose to either use your name or a nickname, its silly but its actually cool to call you by your chosen nickname.
- You have 3 different types of the way you get around the world, 8 way run with the d-pad, use rollerskates with the circle button, or use a fast bicycle. And you get to ride on a rhyhorn to get passed the rocky roads.
- The EXP share is no longer a held item, its a key item that gives EXP to all your pokemon in your party. It is such a great idea and you don't have to worry about a specific pokemon that is heavily under leveled than your chosen pokemon. Also you can gain experience by catching pokemon.
- There is a stat boosting mini game you can play where you stand, its limited so don't think you're gonna fully max out all of your lvl 100 Mewtwo's stats.
- The online in this game is heavily worked on, you can send messages, ask for battles or trades, or look at your friend's or a stranger's profile instantly were you stand and don't have to be in a pokemon center.
- The menus are much much more improved in this game, you go to your pokemon menu and you can restore health or get rid of status elements and in the bag menu they display your pokemon on the side to let you know if they're about to faint.
- There are over 400 pokemon with 3 different pokedex's to complete. Central, Costal, and Mountain. Also the mega evolutions are the coolest looking evolutions ever, although its for certain pokemon I still wish there were more.
Pokemon now have fully 3D models replacing the sprites and they look very gorgeous and much more colorful than the previous console versions, especially the animations of the attacks and if you stand idol to watch the Pokemon stare at eachother. The older pokemon have slightly changed cries, they sound like their old cries but slightly different. Pikachu on the otherhand is voiced by Ikue Ontani known to voice Pikachu from the anime.
The world is amazing to explore, you would almost forget about the 2d world and 2d character models from previous games and think you're playing a Final Fantasy world in a pokemon themed game.
The 3D effect is....kind of a waste, like the only 3D is when you're battling and training instead of exploring the 3D world. The battles in 3D aren't very good because of the framerate suffers so much when a Pokemon does a move. But I personally play mostly in 2D.
As for the whole game, its the traditional pokemon formula. Collect 8 badges, stop an organization from getting their hands on legendary pokemon, beat the elite 4, complete your pokedex. Its the same as any other pokemon but slammed with huge lead from 2D to 3D. There's always online to keep you company for a very long time.
After the past 14 years of my life playing Pokemon, I never got tired of it. Its so addictive and I love what they've over the years to keep me from coming back, I love the concept with animals with elements, I love battling, I love trading, It urges me to catch them all and level them all up to level 100. I know I have these 2 games for a couple days but I know this will be the most played 3DS game I'll dive into for years to come. (....Until they come up with a new one. Possibly Ruby & Saphire remakes.) This is one of the best anniversaries Ive seen get so much love and popularity. I was blown away when i played the first hour because of this huge leap they made, 14 years ago I played Pokemon Yellow when I was 6 years old and now I'm here playing pokemon in 3D with so many improvements. I didn't spoil myself because If I did I wouldn't be as exided as I am right now. (Luckily I avoided a lot of the huge spoilers here) Here's to 15 more years of Pokemon. Happy 15 year anniversary!
Pokemon X and Y gets a 10 out of 10.
