Nintendo has now sold more than 11.5 million "3DS family" units in the United States alone, the company announced today. Worldwide, Nintendo has sold more than 34.98 million systems, meaning the U.S. market makes up about one-third of all sales. Importantly, Nintendo counts 3DS XL and the 2DS as part of the "3DS family."

Gamers also bought a record number of 3DS games in 2013, Nintendo said. The company sold over 16 million combined packaged and digital 3DS games last year in North America, an increase of 45 percent compared to 2012.

On a worldwide basis, Nintendo has sold more than 122 million 3DS games."Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players," Nintendo of America marketing executive Scott Moffitt said.

Moffitt added that the "best days" of the 3DS are still to come in 2014 and beyond.

This is the first Nintendo handheld since the GBA that I am actually buying games for that aren't just Pokemon. Well done, Nintendo.

So....in other words just the DS? Also you missed a butt load of awesome games if all you bought on the DS was Pokemon.

There were some really bad ones too, and some of the good ones were limited by tech.

So just like every other game console in existence? Good to know.

More of my friends have a 3DS than ever did a DS. And by that I mean, very few of my friends had a DS, while the majority of them have a 3DS. That's a pretty big deal, I'd say.

That there 3DS sure did tank, just like they predicted. Lol.

It's true

3DS is an all-around success and a brilliant name in the family of Nintendo handhelds. Even with my nostalgia towards things like GBC and GBA, 3DS may be my favorite handheld platform ever

In other words, I love you

Damn, the 3DS has really come a long way. I remember picking up the thing at launch, when everyone predicted it to be a failure, and to see it evolve from there was a really cool thing to experience.

That, and a lot of my friends have bought the system to play Pokemon and Animal Crossing. I had friends who never showed any interest in gaming pick up a 3DS and play it nonstop. I'm able to talk to quite a few people about what I've been playing lately, which never really happened during the DS' lifetime. It's a solid system, and I look forward to expanding my library in the future.

I absolutely love my 3DS, and it's probably my favorite handheld of all time. DS was great, but I can play all of it's library on my 3DS, and the GBA doesn't have a lot of games I love, and some of the ones I did like, I got on the ambassador program in 2011. The Virtual Console could be better but still has a pretty good line-up that can only get better (but I want Final Fantasy on here already!). And then the e-shop games are really good and deserve a lot of praise. And then there's the extremely rich retail line-up, where I have 24 games and don't even have everything I want from previous years yet, out of those games I have maybe the best Pokemon game ever, a great 3D Mario, an amazing sequel to Luigi's Mansion, two of the best Zelda games ever made, the best Fire Emblem I have ever played, and so much more. And this console is about to finish only it's 3rd year on the market, which is extremely impressive.
