Nintendo has emphasised its continuing commitment to games consoles despite Friday's losses, and rejected calls to release titles on smartphones.

In a press conference on Friday (translated by The Wall Street Journal), president Satoru Iwata explained that any move to release key franchises such as Mario, Zelda or Pokemon on smartphones would likely have a negative impact on 3DS sales.

They easily can put their casual crap on smartphones though (Brain Age Academy, Wario Ware etc)

How would super mario bros 1-3 and Pokemon Red/Blue hurt 3ds sales

Slap a $5-8 price tag on Red/Blue and it would out-profit X/Y

How about they release Pokemon Red/Blue on the 3DS VC to begin with? =/

I think they are only going to use smartphones for integration purposes like how Watchdogs for PS4 is going to use it or how PS4 has an official app.

the casual crap would be good on smartphones but on the other hand who of those casuals would buy the consoles then anymore? i personally hate cellphone gaming it hurts my gamer's soul and is utterly crappy. Ill stick with the 3ds for mobile use

yeah i hope theyll do that for watchdogs on wii u too

Nintendo should make some Mario card games, some mini games for smartphones and tablets if it wants to tap into that market. Nintendo would do severe damage to itself if it was to start releasing its flagship games on smartphones and tablets and I'm not entirely sure how you could play those games on tablets and smartphones with touchscreen functionality.

Good. If they really really want to put games on phones, it's gonna be from the NES era. And not the greats too. That should be enough to pull a bunch of people into buying nintendo hardware

It'd be awkward playing an old port on a touchscreen. And not very many people have any intention of buying a Bluetooth gamepad for their phone.

Minigames may be interesting, but Nintendo has to keep them pretty simple.

Nintendo does have some IP that may work on smartphones, such as sequels to the original Yoshi or WarioWare Inc.

But I'm mostly thinking of more companion apps, like a Miiverse app or a pokédex app. Maybe even an Animal Crossing Plaza like the Wii U's.

It will never happen, if Nintendo ever does stop making consoles I would probably die a little inside lol.

People are expecting a Sega but unlike them Nintendo have handhelds to fall back on. Gamecube was fantastic but failed in sales then Wii happened.

Nintendo have too many franchises that they know will sell their consoles.
