Nintendo DS games will be ported onto the Wii U's virtual console, Nintendo has announced.

The reveal just popped up on Nintendo Japan's site (via NintendoLife). The only picture demonstrating the conversion is an image of Brain Age where the GamePad screen is divided vertically to emulate the spine of the DS.

It may seem somewhat odd to port games from a dual-screen system onto another dual-screen system and only use one of the screens, but peeling one's eyes between the adjacent DS screens is a lot less cumbersome than looking back and forth between your lap and TV. Plus the dimensions of the Gamepad emulate those of a DS when turned on its side. It's unclear if all games will make this same sort of transition or if others will in fact use both screens. Perhaps all titles will come with an option for both? That would be pretty slick.

We've contacted Nintendo asking for clarification on exactly how this will work and we'll let you know if we get confirmation either way.

Additionally, Nintendo showed off a video of its "quick-load" update that will allow players to boot up software on the GamePad slightly quicker than waiting for it to also manifest itself on the TV. Using this feature means you're taken to a slightly different menu where you first select the software you wish to run, then the user, and it goes straight into game

Elsewhere tonight Nintendo announced that it will be bringing Nintendo Network IDs onto mobile devices and debuting some sort of health-related platform - possibly a 3DS accessory - in 2015.

Yeah, n64 and gamecube. I have a 3DS, and I have almost all of the DS games I want.

That's pretty cool. Like others, I have a 3ds and that is compatible with DS software. But it would be snazzy to have it on my Wij U.

For people who don`t own a DS or 3DS it`s pretty great.

Did anyone else immediately think DragonQuest IX? I wouldn't mind replaying that on WiiU.

Some people always have a cellphone on them. I'm so awesome I always have a 3DS.

No, because that's not gonna happen. Unless Nintendo intends to change their strategy to VC as well, and stop doing this weekly/monthly crap that won't happen for 5 years.

True. Given how GBA games were announced last year, and we don't even have ONE yet, I doubt we'll really see much.

I would actually like a physical DS player for the Wii U. I have already bought a bunch of DS games and would prefer not to buy them again just so I can play them on the TV. Still, this is really cool and I will at least buy one game to try it out.

Cool news, but I probably won't buy many games. Maybe some that have rare or out of print copies, but if anything, this will make me more motivated to just pick up physical copies of the DS games I don't have. I can't imagine that the prices will be so cheap to convince me to buy the VC releases instead of the physical cartridges.

I really want to get excited, but it's very hard.

The GBA was confirmed to come to VC, what, over a year ago? And now they're revealing new console additions when they haven't even given us any remote idea of when the one announced a year ago is coming? Are you kidding me?

The way Nintendo runs the VC is absolutely pathetic. I can imagine, at this rate, seeing a year from now the very first DS title, and that being Super Mario 64 DS. The next being some unknown title that nobody cared about, released months later.

Nintendo desperately needs to get things in order. The fact that they have to release titles over and over and over again (and at an extremely slow rate, with that) just because they don't have a unified VC is painful. So very painful. I'm still yet to make any VC purchases. I look at the selection, and there's nothing I'm even interested in purchasing because instead of adding the titles I missed out on because I was young and had to rely on parents, they're always releasing Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, games that I own a billion times already. It just makes me sad.

Although I do have to say that the DS is an incredibly strange addition. The games can still be played on the 3DS, the current generation handheld. I really don't know what's going on in Nintendo's mind here. First announcing GBA VC games for the Wii U and not the 3DS, and now this...

I'm really glad for this, but only if they can do two things: release them much more quickly than normal, and make them not look absolutely terrible, especially the 3D games.

OOH! You know what games I want to get out of this? Megaman ZX and Mario & Luigi: Partners In Time, as well as the DS Zelda titles!
