James Cameron Gives Update on AVATAR Sequels; Still Deciding How Much of the Film to Shoot in High Frame

In the ensuing years since the release of Avatar—the highest grossing film of all time—we’ve been privy to plenty of “updates” on the status of the sequels from folks tied to the production, and director James Cameron has now offered up yet another. As Fox has now finally set December 2016, 2017, and 2018 release dates for the three upcoming Avatar sequels, this update comes backed by the fact that the films are really, truly, actually coming, and Cameron seems to be in a solid place with regards to planning. The filmmaker says they’re developing the software while he works on the scripts and designs all the new creatures and environments, and he added that he hasn’t decided whether he will shoot all or just some of the film in High Frame Rate like Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.

While speaking with RTL (via MarketSaw and CS), Cameron offered a status update on the three Avatar sequels:

Seems very optimistic imo

I feel like after the first one, even though I've never seen it. I don't know how this will turn out because on one hand people may not like it because after all it's a sequel and on the other hand it could be a phenomenal movie. I just think it may be hard to live up to the praise set by the original, but hey. Its James Cameron, he is like Miyamoto of movies. I'm more curious to see the new Avatar Land at Animal Kingdom rather then another movie tbh.

Meh, the film wasn't even that great. The special effects were pretty phenomenal but the film itself was average.

Not bothered about a sequel.

lol I would definitely disagree with that. Martin Scorsese (if you want someone still living) would be a better choice for the "miyamoto" (i.e. legend) of filmmaking. Kubrick and Hitchcock would be the two better choices if you are going for those who are dead.
