Elop didn't do bad with Nokia. Because of him, I love Nokia products again. If they went Android I'd be using a Samsung right now.

Elop killed off Symbian while expecting all Symbian customers to migrate to WPOS. And under his leadership Nokia was forced to have Microsoft take over what was left of the company.

Scary news for xbox fans with elop in control.

The great thing about the 360 was that ballmer wasn't in close touch. It showed.

But this... Now it's ballmer 2.0 running xbox every day.

Elop will be simply trying to bleed money from gamers wallets to try to look good to the new CEO.

Worst possible choice.

I don't blame him for wanting to remove Microsoft from the games industry.

Why Microsoft feels the need to fritter money away on a video games division, online services like Outlook.com and Bing as well as tablets is beyond me.

If I was CEO of Microsoft, I'd asset strip the Xbox Division at the end of the Xbox One's life cycle and sell it off, I'd shut down all online services which do nothing but lose Microsoft money (from what I've read) and I'd asset strip the surface division and sell it off as well.

These consumer-centric divisions do not aid Microsoft in anyway, shape or form. Microsoft doesn't need any of this stuff, it's just a waste of their effort, time and money. Even Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen thinks so too.

hes dropping x1 prices, so current X1 fans may be happy. If he stay in charge though we may not see microsoft make a 9th gen consul. I do hope we see someone who is much more interested in gaming take microsoft's place next gen though. nividea steam, and apple would have a real opening then, steam only if they drop the multiple version thing.

If he tries to make the xbox brand do bad financialy, he may help xbox gamers get cheap X1's but Microsoft first party would almost definitely suffer.

X1 price drop is UK only and a promotional for Titanfall. It's not looking like MS has a full on price drop ready yet esp for the US.

Is that a pricecut?
Every other console refers to it as a "bundled game package".

Isn't it going to be the price of the x1 currently, plus a free titanfall disc?
Not sure how that's a price cut.

:/ Symbian was dying. It was slowly killing Nokia because Nokia couldn't get a foot hold in the US. They wanted a piece of that pie. Windows Phone has done great, and Nokia has done great with it. Microsoft buying them isn't because Nokia was dead but it was Because Microsoft couldn't loose their best hardware manufacture to Android (look at Nokia X Family).

With Nokia now apart of Microsoft, I expect them to be able to make WP better, and their hardware even sharper. Possibly be able to stop with exclusive carrier in the US, which is killing sells.

I don't blame him for wanting to remove Microsoft from the games industry.

Why Microsoft feels the need to fritter money away on a video games division, online services like Outlook.com and Bing as well as tablets is beyond me.

The problem is, if you actually do research, the Xbox Division doesn't loose Microsoft money. Overall it makes them money. Not their biggest winner. Mainly because of all the initial loose on hardware (which I don't think Microsoft is loosing money in the Xbox One). And cut all the online junk? Really? I guess your right. Give up to Google. Let them rule the world :/. Bing is essential to being able to make a personal assistant like Siri for WP. WP is essential to Microsoft, by the way, because mobile is the future. And getting rid of Surface wouldn't be a bad idea with Nokia Lumia under Microsoft now. Lumia is a bigger brand with better design philosophy.

Big companies like Microsoft loose money on projects all the time. Look at Google at how much money they waste on Google Plus. Look at how much money they wasted on Google 411. You know why? So they can make their voice control better. That was the whole reason for it. Why do you think MS made their own 411? For the same reason. Just because something looses you money doesn't mean you should scrap it. You should scrap projects that don't add any value or doesn't make sense to continue anymore.

Look at Google and how they cut things. They cut Google Wave. I loved that project, but it wasn't adding up to the big revolution anymore so it shouldn't be continued.

But they keep Google Plus. Why do you think so? Because their name is big enough that someday, when my kids grow up, they can choose to use Facebook - where their parents are on - or they can choose Google Plus, which their parents don't pay attention to yet. For a teenager, it's a clear cut choice.

So they waste billions on it. And will continue to do so until they run out of money. Which, being Google, will never happen.

Microsoft shouldn't give up on some projects. And some aren't without merit. I hope that Microsoft doesn't listen to the TWO INVESTORS who is calling for these moves.

This is going to move consoles.

Titanfall by itself is a killer app.

Add a price cut and UK gamers may see this as a no brainer.

If the Xbox division was a big money spinner like you are suggesting (you're wrong as per usual by the way) then explain to me why an ever increasing number of investors want to get rid of the division?

It makes Microsoft no money whatsoever and if it does make Microsoft money in the future it will be a very small amount.

Did the 360 recover the original Xbox's costs?

Ordinarily, you write off sunk costs when starting a new project, but it would be interesting to see if the original investment has been recovered.

After that, you have to see if the division held up against the firm's WACC through those periods (2001-2014).

We can subtract the Xbone from this for obvious reasons.

There are several other considerations for the valuation of the division, but this is the place to start. Do you know of anyone who has already compiled the information? I do not really have time to go through 13 years of K-10's to figure it out.

MS makes money with windows. but they are going to have to cut their profit margins on each copy sold moving forward. with competitors beating them with price and software, people are wising up at a faster rate than ever.

Mobile is huge. though MS seems to have failed to grasp a major share of the market, what they have now is an indicator that they stand to profit in the coming days and years.

Surface is a confused product. doesn't know if it's a poorly designed laptop or a poorly designed tablet. Tries to do everything decently and ends up doing nothing great. Kill it.

Windows Phone and other devices (even tablets) that use this OS are viable. It's all in the execution. Hopefully the new CEO hires some hot shot engineers and designers who are risk takers, because he himself is no visionary (though you'll often find him holding his hands up in a mystical way while starting blankly ahead...).

Xbox is actually a core MS product and service now. Even on PCs and phones you'll find Xbox Music, Xbox Video, Xbox Live. It's a value add that will significantly hurt it's other offerings if stripped away. Not to mentioned the business as a whole actually is a decent contributor to Microsofts bottom line.

And then there is bing. you know why MS has bing? For one, the value add a as a service. But the real value is in advertising. MS makes good money off of the ads. Thats the same Model Google uses and it has serves them well. so well that they can afford to offer a bunch of half baked me-too services for free (if you call paying with your privacy free).

That brings us to Outlook.com.  Tremendous service. One of the best email/PIM services out there right now. Value add and sort of a "halo" product. Not as robust as all the google services combined, but more clean, fast, and easy to use. Also without forcing you to sign your right to privacy away as a term of use (though the NSA and DHS probably make that a moot point with PRISM).

Elop is a pretty bad guy for the job. He presided over the sinking of Nokia simply because he made the mistake novices do - he saw the immediate in-your-face suitcase full of cash rather than thinking long-term implications and residuals. Now, we have major weird decisions on the Xbox side. not sure if he is responsible for it, but Titanfall shows a LOT of purchase intent by consumers. 2/3rds of the install base played the beta. Beyond that, there are lots of folks all over teh internetz simply waiting for this one game to buy the x1. the game would sell consoles. If the sales slowed too early, then go for it. but this preemptive strike seems either desperate or he's trying so hard that he misses the details.

i'm a fan of all the systems. And it would be sad to see the Xbox legacy go down because of some dope. The first Xbox was kind lame, but had decent graphics. The 360 was the most powerful and in my opinion, best console of its generation. And the X1 is pretty great too.

I have only one hope if somehow the Xbox becomes no more...
