Overall I think he hits on a topic, especially in the second video, that a lot of people seem to ignore in gaming today. Despite all the claim for innovation, the numbers just don't match up and honestly it's quite sad. In a lot of ways I think Wii U matches what people have been calling for. It's an innovative HD system at an affordable price with backwards compatibility, and has free online gaming. Yet, people refuse to give the system a chance.

Wii U is the new virtual boy. Hearing that is getting old and this fella is about a year late to the party.

It's a stretch.

THE NAME IS FLAWED!!!!

First video is false, the Wii u has actually already outsold the virtual boy several times over.

The second video is true... Except for the premise, the premise beleive these people to be 'gamers', which isnt true, this is a new influx of users who appeared around the ps2 generation when marketing began to really take off, not too disimilar to the flock that appeared on wii, just brought in by different marketing appeal, they are not 'gamers', they are casuals who have been marketed to believe they are 'hardcore gamers'.

The video attempts to state this isnt true, but really stumbles on its reasons with the mario games for me.

The reason these games dont sell megamillions, is because their just arent that many of us. And among our small numbers, are very different, very defined tastes, so any kind of game, no matter how quality, just might not appeal to the whole tiny little pie.... ANd then theres the fact that the marketing budget for these games are so small, that many who would otherwise be busy might never know the game even exists until its on the used shelf for 10 bucks.

In comparison, the marketing division of the publisher conglomerates has found a much easier, much more manipulatable, much simpler demographic they can literally tell what to buy. Of course they are going to ditch the originals with their 'standards' like a bad habit.

The rest of it seems to be really spot on... and depressing, as I own and constantly praise every innovative game it showed...

It's all debatable, but that one part truly is depressing and it's a problem for both us and the industry. With the rising cost of development, we're going to see even more formulaic 'CoDized' games and less new innovative, or even interesting stuff. It's going to get to the point that all we're left with is the same old crap.

So now we are blaming gaming going to hell on the casual gamer, which is partially true. That gaming audience bought into whatever was gaining popularity at the time. Seems to me the casuals simply amplified the success of semi-established franchised when they flooded the market. for example COD, 4 was getting praise, as well as 5 and 6. these games were coming out when the gaming market was flooding with casuals. CoD being considered the best game of the time over inflated with the casuals going to whatever game seems popular.  Few of them became hardcore, but most didn't. Almost all of them follow the trend, but there is a increased portion starting to leave it.

Other devs started coping games that benefited from the extra casuals, though those games may have benefited almost purely by timing. Lets say RE4 came out around the same time as COD 4, chances are it may have completely replaced AC, get over hyped, and be on  yearly releases. Now A large chunk of this market is here to stay, unfortunately. Mobile and other similar gaming will only hurt the massive casual games as well, the hardcore games and less known games will be almost completely unaffected for the most part.

Even looking at nintendo, they got confused and didn't know what to do when the wii got overcrowded with their casual crowd. Same with the rest of the market. Now the only good thing about them, is the casual crowed appears to be leveling out and starting to stream away from constant COD and yearly releases.

And now for the Future. Hopefully the new crowed will diminish a noticeable amount. Looking at Sony is where it gets interesting though, post bankruptcy. Chances are they will go bankrupt, if not that bravo to sony. My prediction is PS4 will be bought up but sales hurt severely as a side effect. Also expecting a splinter movement to xbox and wiiU. xbox will almost certinly get the casual crowd. wiiU is more likely to get lots of exclusive JRPGs and other Japaneses games, and leave a noticable market split.

Simple version, want COD and similar rehashes, get a Xbox, want something else, get PC or wiiU.

Wow, after watching the first video, I was sorry I gave it a hit.  I'll agree with Sorceror that the video's about a year late... making any of his claims that could have seemed accurate at that time just seem a sorry attempt at catching viewers now.  But, it does preface the second video well enough.  The initial part of that video had me dying a little inside too since it, initially, sounded like he was telling gamers not to want innovation.  Not until watching the full second video did I see that it's more a plea to gamers to give the ambitious game developers a chance.

It is troublesome to see where the industry is heading... and with our help in sales.  I'll admit, I'll keep buying some of the franchises if their previous titles included enough innovation to hook me(yes, even CoD) but will readily toss aside those that have hit an idea rut but throw on "fresh paint" yearly (lookin' at you Madden!)
