E Online reports that Gobber, the rough-and-tumble viking and right-hand man of chief Stoick, is the character who will come out. While watching a couple bicker, he casually references the unspoken reasons he never got married. The idea came from voice actor Craig Ferguson, who ad-libbed a line during recording. Writer and director Dean DeBlois, who is himself openly gay, loved the idea.

It does sound like they've just shoehorned it in. Not bothered either way but I don't really see the point of characters randomly announcing their sexual orientation.
