Digital Foundry has posted their analysis of Mario Kart 8, they found that the game runs in 720p native, and averages 59 fps.

Spoiler

We can confirm that Mario Kart 8 operates at what is effectively the console's standard 1280x720. Of course, considering the quality of the visuals, this can hardly be considered a disappointment especially when other developers are struggling to hit 1080p consistently on more powerful hardware. What is surprising, however, is the complete omission of anti-aliasing in any form. At the very least, Nintendo has previously utilised a basic edge-smoothing algorithm across its Wii U titles and such a feature could have demonstrably improved image quality without a serious performance hit. As it stands, however, we're left with a heavily aliased presentation filled with obvious stair-stepping and pixel-crawling artefacts throughout most scenes. Busier areas can even result in a loss of detail to the point of reducing visibility.

Thankfully, the lacklustre image quality does little to spoil an otherwise magnificent visual package. It's immediately apparent that a lot of effort is invested in creating rich, vibrant courses loaded with peripheral detail. Tracks are alive and bursting with colour and animation backed by an overhauled lighting solution and a smattering of excellent texture-work. The addition of gravity-defying magnetic sections has also allowed the designers to go a bit crazy with track design, giving way to massive moving structures and detailed metallic obelisks rising sharply out of the terrain.

first it was reported to be 1080p 60fps & now it's 720p 59fps.

bug or WiiU hardware hit it's limit already.

the 59fps to 60fps is noticeable, it may be even more noticeable on a big screen.

It's only 59fps in races with AI turned on.

You could quite easily race your friend in 2 player with AI's turned off and still get 60fps. Or you could race ghosts.

lol

It was reported to be 1080p by people who have no clue.
ie, game journalists.

It was always expected to be 720p, or more if we cared about resolution over graphical fidelity.

You notice a single frame?
Dunno how you manage with all the 30fps games on p4 and x1 then.

All the people dissing the XB1 for 1080p on MK8 have been put to rest.

Still an amazing looking game. Keeping my preorder :)

Would anyone realistically cancel their pre-order because of this?

Thought so, native 720p with Wii U's very decent upscaler to 1080p will look great on my TV.

Side by side could anyone tell the difference between 1 frame? Still runs and looks better than many PS4/Xbone games so far.

lots of people are saying they are unless it's gets sorted out.

it is not that it's not 60fps & it's running at 59fps, what is in fact happening is the game is either dropping or repeating a frame every 64th screen/frame.so the game or what you are seeing on the screen hangs for just a tiny amount, but once you see it you always seem to notice it.

it's also got no anti-aliasing either.

some are saying the framerate issues could be due to the gamepad & off screen play,

same, at least that has anti-aliasing, aka bluring the edges of things.

Thats not it. if it was just 1/60th of a second it would be completely unnoticable. The problem is it breaks synch with the tv's refresh rate making a rather noticable stutter. The same can happen going OVER 60fps. Which is probably whats actually happening here. Having 59fps with a duplicate would still be 60fps as far as your 60hz screen is concerned. Adding IN an extra frame, even if a dupe would lead to sync stutter issues.

Judging by their observation of it being perfect 60fps in online multiplayer, or basically perfect fps as long as there are no bots present, it looks like this was a purposeful flag put in on a count loop for assisting in debugging purposes, and they forgot to remove it after the solution.

This will very likely be patched as soon as its brought to nintendos attention.

Yes  COD has terrible anti-aliasing.

I'm dissapointed about the AA news. 3D World, Wind Waker etc. were AA'd quite good. I don't care really if it's 1080p or not, but I prefer good AA to high resolutions.

It is so funny this issue was made aware by digital foundry BEFORE THE GAME WAS RELEASED. I am willing to bet everything that 99% of players would have either 1 not notice or 2 notice but wouldnt give a dman because they were having so much fun with the game... You know the actual reason you buy video games. But now what you have are a bunch of so called experts who CLAIM they were all in to buy a WiiU but now because of this issue they refuse to and as one poster of Neogaf said nintendo "BLEW IT" damn gamers make me laugh now and days
