and sourced:

Nintendo has released a major system update for Wii U, bringing the firmware version up to 5.0.0. One of the major features introduced in today’s update is the quick start menu. Players can now more easily begin playing games without having to encounter the menu screen. Other changes/additions include new GamePad Alerts that can be displayed on the GamePad when the Wii U is turned off, the ability to install system updates after they’re finished downloading while the console is in Standby, and more.

Read more at http://nintendoevery...-menu-and-more/

  • A Quick Start Menu is now displayed when users press the GamePad POWER Button or HOME Button to power on the Wii U
    • Users can start recently played or newly installed software directly from the Quick Start Menu *1
  • Wii U GamePad Alerts (special notifications from Nintendo) can be displayed on the GamePad when the Wii U is powered down
    • Users will be notified with an audio ringtone when a new GamePad Alert is displayed
    • GamePad Alerts that have been received can also be viewed through the Quick Start Menu*2

Changes to Standby Functions:

  • System updates will now automatically install after download when the Wii U is in Standby

Changes to the Wii U Menu:

  • The User Settings screen now displays when users select their User Mii from the Wii U Menu
  • The design and layout of the Users Settings screen has been updated
    • This includes the ability to switch the active user from the User Settings screen

Changes to System Settings:

  • Quick Start Menu options have been added to Power Settings
    • Wii U GamePad Alert options are located within the Quick Start Menu options

Changes to the HOME Menu

  • A Notification icon is now available on the HOME Menu, allowing users to launch the Notifications feature from the HOME Menu

Improvements to system stability and usability:

  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience

(*1) The Quick Start Menu is only displayed when the Wii U GamePad POWER or HOME Buttons are pressed. Other controllers, such as the Wii Remote Plus and Wii U Pro Controller, will continue to power on the Wii U

(*2) Wii U GamePad Alerts are different from the notifications received via the Wii U Notifications feature. Wii U GamePad Alerts settings can be changed via Power Settings located in System Settings.

it;s gotten a lot faster compared to day one I think. Possible Nintendo doesn't consider it a big enough issue to bother mentioning.

Yeah I suppose.

Kinda ironic how the update came out the day iOS 8 was announced...

I noticed it takes longer to open the eShop though :(

Other than that everything else seems okay, the home menu opens noticibly faster, the nintendo network settings weren't really needed, and for some reason the quick open menu doesn't work for me...

the eshop problem is probably because of the influx of users with the release of mario kart 8, and now a system update. those kinks should work themselves out soon.

Yeah, it's about half a gig. Lucky you can start the download and then just click "not now" to make it download in the background. Then you just have to install it.

You have to turn off the system and wait about 30-60 seconds, you can tell it's sending a bunch of data to the upad because turning off takes forever now.

Also, booting to the menu seems a lot slower than before, not from the quickstart, but actually booting as normal.

Weird, it automatically made me update... Couldn't play MK8 with my dad at lunch. :/ Ah well, he hates it anyway. :P Nah, he's just used to automatic steering from MKWii, so he gets all depressed when he plays using manual. xD

So, Nintendo made it slower, just so they can make it faster is what I am getting at?

No, Nollog is referring to the initial setup of quick start. Once the update installs turn the Wii U off completely for about a minute. Otherwise, quick start cannot setup and the reason it isn't working for ya.

After this initial setup, its super quick.

The main menu seems to load slower than before, yes.
This is because it's injecting some code from the upad first, instead of just going straight to the menu.
