Score one -- a really, really big one -- for Microsoft.

The sequel to the unexpectedly acclaimed 2013 Tomb Raider series reboot, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is going to be exclusively on Xbox One when it launches next holiday 2015. The game was announced in June at E3, but the assumption then was that it would be multi-platform. It was a safe assumption: The original as well as its remastered version were available for Xbox and PlayStation platforms (as well as PC and Mac).

Damn what a shock.

Copy and pasted my response to this from another forum (lol):

I can see the plus and minus in this. The plus is that Microsoft is doing what Nintendo is doing: building exclusives so that a purchase of their system is more compelling. The minus is that Square-Enix isn't doing all that great, and limiting a franchise that not only got its start on Playstation and also isn't a top telling title against Uncharted from which the reboot draws so heavily upon (and not necessarily in a bad way, I actually LIKED the Tomb Raider reboot!) could potentially limit the sales of the game WAY more than they're anticipating.

Either way, this is both good and bad, but if the game is THAT good, Microsoft may have found their "Uncharted", and I honestly would prefer playing as Lara Croft over Nathan Drake, lol

Not quite.... Thats a false equivilence.

Nintendo (And Sony) is funding and helping to develop games that none of these AAA publishers would ever take a chance on, for the people who enjoy those kinds of games the AAA factory line refuses to make. Without Nintendo, these games would not exist. They would simply be those cancelled games that are brought up every couple of years and mourned for potential never realized.

Microsoft is taking existing games and doing nothing more than paying to keep them out of players hands on other consoles for a time proportional to the size of the money bag they crapped out.

Do you have a link to this info? I've hearded conflicting stories, but nothing official. This was really poorly communicated.

I'm fine with 3rd Party exclusives existing, but this conflicts with Square's view on Tomb Raider: that only after a year on the market on 5 different systems with 2 separate releases was the game considered a success. Putting it only on the system that is selling the worst right now doesn't seem logical. I'm not sure how Square benefits from this in the long run.

It was always a safe bet it was just timed exclusivity.

This statement is false. The previous statement is true.

RIP in peace Nintendo.
