I'm thinking about the 4, like the controller way more, and has some cool games coming out. Not sure what I would buy on the PS3, maybe a few titles. So that leads me to ask, is the PS4 backwards compatible in any way?

I know its not by disc, but are there like select games you can download or anything? This is why I like Nintendo, lol. I know the PS3, well the first version, is backwards for 1/2 (Why they didn't do it for 3 with the 4 is beyond me. 'for the gamers' lol right.) Oh well.

Also kind of think of maybe a PSP/PSVita but I can emulate a ps3. The devices are quality looking, but man the joysticks, buttons and all feel weak.

Sorry if it dosent make a lot of sense, its 6am and I haven't slept yet. xD

The PS4 can only play PS3 games through Playstation Now, which is their video game streaming service which is...stupidly expensive at the moment.

Only certain models of the PS3 are backwards compatible with PS2 games, but all models are backwards compatible with PS1 games.

A Vita is only really that great if you're willing to play a wide variety of games from indies to more niche titles. Personally, I think a Vita is well worth the money, but not before a PS3...which brings me to my last point.

I'd personally go with a PS3 right now. You can get a large deal of collections for it for $20 or less now, such as Jak & Daxter, inFAMOUS (includes inFAMOUS 1, 2, Festival of Blood and various DLCs), Uncharted, SoTC/ICO, Ratchet & Clank, and so on. I'd also suggest against getting a super slim if at all possible...I've heard poor things about it. Get PS+ as well, even if you just own one system. Claim all the games for PS3/Vita/PS4, save them up for when/if you eventually get those systems.

I have all 3 systems(wiiu,ps4,X1) and I advice you to wait on the ps4. At least till next year when most if the big games that have been shown will come out.

PS3 is my fave last gen system. Full of amazing games and the best part is region free so importing is easy and fun!

I love PSP and Vita as well. Wait on PS4 and go for PS3 now. Those older PS3's had severe heating issues like 360 just not as prevalent but still a good many of them had the yellow light of death. Snag a  super slim. Those issues are gone. No PS2 BC tho.

Why are they all backwards with 1, but not 2? Strange, but I guess its a small hardware thing that they didn't want to deal with.

So if you have PS+, you can claim the free games even if you don't own the system? I wish M$ did that, would've liked to claim some of those Xbone titles, because I know were probably getting one for my brother sometime down the line. Thats pertty cool. Its the one thing that makes me sad for not getting one earlier, so many free games missed.

Of-course, I wasen't really thinking about doing it right now, but within the next 2 years.

Just build a PC.

The desktop in the house handles games pretty decently, could be better but it is pre-built (We got a good deal).  I do hope to build one someday though. PC gaming isn't really my thing, I prefer consoles, espically controllers, though I am working on to get my Wii U Pro Controller to play pc games, or atleast go for the 360 controller. Yes I know some are better with the keyboard. I was mainly talking about exclusives, and maybe some more.

So is there any third party or other controllers for the PS3 that arn't so bad?

Why are they all backwards with 1, but not 2? Strange, but I guess its a small hardware thing that they didn't want to deal with. It has to do with architecture. The chip they had put in earlier models of PS3 wasn't exactly cheap, so they dropped it after awhile.

You can claim the PS3/Vita titles through the PS3 itself, but you have to use the browser version of the PS Store to claim the PS4 games.

So is there any third party or other controllers for the PS3 that arn't so bad? I personally don't trust third party controllers no matter what system it's for. Just pony up the extra cash for the Dualshocks, and I think you'll be happier with those.

Responses in bold.

PS2 chip was 27$ to produce. I am sure with time that could have dropped dramatically. I mean Wii U uses a Wii on a Chip and Wii U makes profit.

Selling my 360 was easy but I could not let my trusty PS3 go. Bought at launch and is still going strong enjoying USF4 on it regularly.

It compliments my Wii U and PS4 quite well.

I can get a huge selection of older games on the cheap, a great Blu Ray/DVD player if my PS4 ever fails, more free stuff included from my PS4 sub and PS3 can now even be controlled by DS4 wirelessly.

Ps3 had the ps2 cpu as an extra chip.

A wii u espresso core is whats known as a superset of the original wii's cpu. It can shut off new logic, reduce clock speed, and function exactly like an old broadway.

So nintendo didnt need to pay to have a broadway included in wii u

I own a ps4 and it's not backwards compatible. Unless you use Playstation Now, which will allow you to stream older titles over the internet.

Their are tons of quality games out for the system and even more coming this fall and next spring. The controller is probably my favorite part, such a joy to play with, after almost a year of heavy heavy playing, the rubber on one of the sticks is finally coming off.

You really can't go wrong with the system.

For now, PS3 is probably the best option. Buy a cheap used one that will give you a couple years of play. Tons of great cheap games for the console. PS4 is not quite there yet...as others said late 2015 will probably be a good time to buy as there aren't too many good games right now. Not to mention the games are all really expensive.

Doesn't ever get mentioned but PS3 has to be one of the best made consoles ever, the tech crammed in at the time and build quality combined with the low failure rate has to be admired.
