Rememeber Pokemon Rumble U? No, well we don’t blame you. Nintendo released it last year with very little marketing support, but it was actually the first effort for NFC figurines to be used in conjunction with a game. Various Pokemon figures were sold at specialty outlets like GameStop that could be used with the game, which was only sold as a digital title on the Wii U.
So what happens if you scan Nintendo’s recently released Amiibo figures for use with the game? Well, some interesting things, it turns out. Pokemon Rumble U is not on the official list of games supported by Amiibo, but by scanning certain figures with the game, they appeared as Pokemon. The Link amiibo turned into a Swinub, while Marth was a Weedle. Very interesting, especially if you’re one of the few people who actually enjoyed Pokemon Rumble U!

Same thing happens if you scan Skylander or Disney Infinity figures, they summon Helper Pokemon in game.
The NFC reader just sees that there is a chip with data on (NFC or RFID, it doesn't really care), and turns the data it reads into a Pokemon.
