News from Japanese publication Sankei Biz has hit the Internet surrounding speculation for Nintendo’s future hardware. According to the site, Sharp will be providing Nintendo with a free-form display for their future hardware, including its next handheld. Sharp is already responsible for both the screens in the Nintendo 3DS as well as the Wii U, so it makes sense that Nintendo plans to continue the business partnership.

 

According to Sankei Biz, production for these screens is set to begin in 2016 and Nintendo is currently working on some sort of donut-shaped display. No information was given about the project outside of the screen, so we don’t know if this is a successor to the Nintendo 3DS, or if Nintendo is gearing up production on its Quality of Life platform that president Satoru Iwata discussed earlier this year. Either way, it’s likely we won’t see anything from this effort until 2017 at the latest.

Does that mean it would have space in the middle or just that it would be circular in shape?

Either way it doesn't feel a lot like a handheld screen. Could be for QoL.

I saw an article earlier about them calling it the 3ds "successor" and I was like WHAT. But now I'm hungry, mmmm donuts

I'm pretty sure it's the QoL thing. I can't imagine a gaming console with a donut shaped screen.

I think the display is probably part of qol. Aside from some base unit there will probably be mobile wear of some sort to accompany.

And the watches are pointless.

I read a few reviews of the moto watch and they say the roundness ends up cutting off parts of the screen.

 

But i guess we will have to wait and see.

Not a watch. More a display screen on the device next to the bed. Nintendo said non wearable QOL. If it is for a future system think it might be part of fusion and evolve the Wii U idea or something somehow.

That is really interesting. (Not being sarcastic) I really need to keep up on these things.

One thing is for sure. I sure hope Nintendo goes with a console/handheld hybrid. I don't even care if it's only as powerful as the Wii U. Hopefully the screen is 720p or higher though.

I'm betting that it will be for a QOL thing, which will be circular and have a passing resemblance to a bell or traffic cone in it's shape.
