PS4 VR headset gets improved specs with 2016 release

"Sony has revealed some big news about its upcoming PlayStation 4 Virtual reality headset, known as Project Morpheus. For one, the VR headset won’t be coming out this year, but when it comes out (2016), its specs will be a lot better.

Both the screen resolution and the refresh rate have improved, in addition to a larger, 5.7-inch screen as well. Here are the full specs of the new Project Morpheus headset:

2.7-inch OLED display
120 hz refresh rate
1920 x 1080 resolution, Sony calls it 1920 x RGB x 1080
100 degree FOV (field of view)
All 1920 x 1080 pixels have RGB sub-pixels, for a better HD image
18ms latency (twice as good as the previous version)
9 tracking LEDs, 3 more than before.
4 demos optimized for the new prototype
Resolution wise, Project Morpheus is close to its main rivals, Oculus Rift and the recently revealed HTC Vive. However, Sony’s headset has an advantage in that it runs at 120 frames per second, while the other two run at 90 frames per second.

During the presentation, Sony also said that they encourage developers to target 120 frames per second with the new headset, although they have made a tool that can take a 60 fps game and double the framerate. As framerates go up, the quality of the image has to go down, of course.

Sony expects to bring the Project Morpheus VR headset to market in the first half of 2016, about a year from now. There’s still no official name — it’s still codenamed “Project Morpheus”. They’ve promised more to come at E3 in June."

Not sure if its going to flop or be the next big thing but I'm not too excited yet.

Not very excited either but interested to see how it plays out nonetheless. It will be interesting to see how this is marketed to a mass audience and see if it can gain enough traction to create a sustainable market for the platform.

If the PS4 can hardly do 1080p on its own, how are the developers going to tackle 1080p times two, at 120 FPS?

"some" game dev? wtf? He's not talking like someone developing games, he's talking like a random internet guy like me and you. What proof do we have that this "dev" is indeed who he says he is? Hell, you could have written all of that!

 

on topic: With the amount the ps4 has sold world wide, if they're smart, the morpheus has the potential to do well. either way, vr tech is improving and i'm excited to finally be able to go into games!

oooooooooooooh, proof that the PS4 is pushed as far as it can go. And yet the Wii U is still getting prettier and better games. All those claiming that the PS4 and Xbone can still get more performance through optimizing are talking out of their asses.

I can see the quality of software lacking for the device. The novelty may wear off quick when the software seems more like a tech demo or half finished idea.  It's a pretty huge undertaking and it's not like Sony devs have been lighting the world on fire with continuous quality content for the ps4.

 

It may go the way of the vita at least regarding direct support.

Whether that is legit or not, we already know the console's cpu is a bottle neck as stated by a variety of devs. I think the problem with morpheus is people are setting themselves up for disappointment because they wrongly expect the quality of software and graphics to match what's already on the PS4.

Games aren't even running at 60 FPS 1080p on the ps4, now how in the world do you expect them to make 1080p 120 fps RENDER TWICE?
Honestly there's nothing that this guy has said that's wrong,

There are quite a few 1080p 60fps games on ps4 actually. The article mentioned something about a tool to double 60fps but don't quite know how that's possible without using the consoles available resources.

Izzat so? I haven't been keeping up with Sony, are they any big budget games or are they indys that don't push the system - or just rainbow.

What a pointless waste of time and money from a company who is already struggling. They should have just waited and made the PS5 come with a VR headset and make it a core aspect of the console instead of an accessory.

Wii U is getting a software patch soon and will include an electronic pdf detailing how to take a pair of old suspenders to use as a strap for the gamepad.

yikes, if people are expecting the same level of graphics on a vr then yea, fair enough. I've already realized it's impossible to expect ps4 level graphics on a ps vr device, so I guess I've saved myself any trouble. I just have issue with "some dev" being quoted as saying a certain device will fail, etc, etc.
