Before we start need to set something clear on the terms "JRPG" and "WRPG" in what it really means.

I will not go in the entire history of the two. Just briefly mention Ultima in 1981 is the first RPG ever and western made. Dragon Slayer in 1984 is the first RPG from Japan, however it was action oriented. Dragon Quest is what began what we typically associate JRPG with turn based and such.

Various kinds of RPGs but let's focus on why we use these terms. Now Japan can make a Western RPG. Dragon's Dogma for example. I like the term WRPG/JRPG describing styles in how they were made. Secret of Evermore western made JRPG style.

If you need modern examples rather than me pointing to Ultima or Might and Magic.

Witcher,Dragon Age Kingdoms of Amalur and Elder Scrolls. Tho in the past they focused much more on customization of your character and party. The JRPG typically focuses on a preset party often teens or kids. So Dragon Quest,Chrono Trigger,Phantasy Star and such.

yeah long intro..sorry. I don't know how many into RPG's here.

Curious to those who do which do they prefer?

BTW for newcomers to these genres. JRPG to get a basic understanding either get Dragon Quest IX on DS or on Wii Shop grab Mario RPG. Western Dragon Age Origins on PC.

Not long ago I would have said JRPGs myself but now I like both esp the older offerings of WRPG. Both styles I like in general with some part of them I do not.

Jrpgs are made by the japanese, thats all there is to it. If its made by the japanese, and its an rpg, its a japanese role playing game.

Yes in place of development but in traditional style and where they stemmed from in origin still changes them. So using style to differentiate makes it much easier to understand. Just because I made Gnocchi al Gorgonzola in Utah does not mean it's a Utahn dish but an Italian dish made in Utah.

The only things I play that come close to RPGs are the paper mario series.

It's hard to say, personally I'm not a fan of traditional turn based RPGs, such as FF7 or Earthbound.  But I really love it when they spice it up, like with the Action Commands in Paper Mario, Braving and Defaulting in Bravely Default, and the wink and weakness effects in SMT IV. If I can get through regular battle in an rpg, then I don't always mind the possibility of grinding, but I cannot stand grinding if I don't care for the combat.

WRPGs are easier for me to get into and I can sometimes have a better time, my favorites being Dust: An Elysian Tale, Skyrim, and Bastion.

JRPGs are either hit or miss for me, ones that I really enjoyed are Bravely Default, SMT IV, and FE: Awakening.

I Think you might like the Ys series. Can get them on Vita,Oath and Origins on STEAM plus Chronicles and Ys Seven and Celeta on Vita/PSP.

Me from 5 years ago would say WRPG hands down, but nowadays I think they are equal, JRPG's are starting to  make a comeback after about a decade of bland garbage, while WRPG's are starting to morph together and all become open world sandbox games that throw you into some tolkeinesque, generic, high fantasy world that is indistinguishable from the rest.

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

Both genres are so good, but I've lost touch with my JRPG-side and I've been enjoying WRPGs slightly more.

Final fantasy and Elder Scrolls are probably my two favorite series and they're completely different. They both scratch a different itch. FF gives me the ridiculous characters and dramatic stories, while Elder Scrolls makes me feel like a God.

One thing I like about jrpgs that wrpgs usually don't do (and to be fair not all jrpgs do as well) is to add a variety of different activities in-game that are only remotely related to the main quest. For example, chocobo racing in FFVII, monster hunting in FFXII, leveling with a trainer while offline in Type 0, etc etc. Jrpgs aren't afraid to give some quality of life improvement features that may take away from the immersion of the game. Western rpgs are usually afraid to do this, they want their whole game to be very serious with no distractions (again usually).

On the other hand, Western rpgs (speaking only about elder scrolls for now) allow you to really become a character and feel like you're a part of the world they create. Also, the action combat really makes it feel like you are the one performing the strike, magic or skill. Dragons Dogma for me was such a breath of fresh air for how it combined some of my favorite aspects of both genres. Can't wait for DDII (...still haven't realy played the expansion of one though.. -.-*)

JRPGs in principle. Recently though WRPGs in practice. (In other words a lot of my favourite games are JRPGs but in recent years WRPGs have been a lot better)
