We know that Retro Studios is hard at work on their next project since releasing the fantastic Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. We knew that much since February last year. However, Liam Robertson from Unseen64 has tweeted that after doing a bit of digging it turns out that their next game for Wii U will be using a brand new engine. It’s unlikely they would be using a new engine if it was another game in the Donkey Kong Country line. New Metroid anyone?

Did a comb of Retro Studios devs. Nintendo must have them on a tight leash, but it's a Wii U game with a new engine. New IP or Metroid?

You don't make a new engine for a game like that. You would recycle the old one.

 

I been saying all along with the people they had to hire this project is big. I do believe it's either Metroid or something very unexpected but I from the postitions they had to fill and since expanding to a larger office this isn't a Kart racing game or a platformer.

Ah, but what about a follow up to Donkey Kong 64? Quite a coincidence the n64 game has just came out on Wii U and since it would be 3d that would need a new engine.

Nah. AI engineers not needed for platformers,you give it to a few guys to model and animate but not much more to it. Enemies have a patterned path and you step on them. Not hard. The positions they filled makes it sound more like Metroid or something else where AI is reactionary.
