In a recent interview with Nintendo UK product manager Gemma Hall, they commented on the success of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D:

We were very pleased with the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, which did especially well considering it was only released for the New Nintendo 3DS, which as a newly released platform itself, had a much smaller install base than the Nintendo 3DS. This shows that Xenoblade Chronicles still has a very loyal fan base, as well as the potential to recruit new RPG fans wishing to play these critically acclaimed games.

Doesn't change the fact that the bottom screen could have been much better if it had been filled with: art of the current area, or they could have filled the map into it instead of just relegating it into one corner; they could have even just made it so artes could be selected on the bottom screen for a much simpler battle system.
