According to a "reliable industry source", the next Xbox will have some sort of system that will prevent gamers from running used games on the it.

Exactly how the system will work is not clear. It could part of the hardware, or it could be part of Xbox Live.

What do you make of this news?

Well if that happens it means we can kiss those annoying online passes goodbye. But, I'd say 35% of my gaming is from used purchases. Hell my new PS3 has more used games than new ones because its hard to find new versions of older games from the beginning of the gen (Uncharted 1, Resistance 1 & 2, FF XIII, etc.)

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

This is not good. How will people be able to rent games now, let alone borrow them from friends?
GameStop and other game trading retailers are not going to like this...

How would this even work? How does it know if the copy of the game you are using is used?

It's similar to the steam istalation. It's like Skyrim for the PC.
Every game comes with it's own verification code and that verification code can only be activated once. It can be installed more than once, but only to the account it was verfied on first.

This would put me off the Xbox 720 if it proves to be true, although I can understand why the games industry want to try and stamp put pre-owned games as they don't gain anything from sales of pre-owned games.

People won't be able to rent games, borrow them , or play used games..... that Xbox is not gonna sell well. I hope they dont blunder their business, even though i'd like to rub it in the fanboys' faces... and even though i dont own, nor do i plan on owning, an xbox.

haha no im seriously happy about this, downside for 720 means more reason to buy wii u, if it were ps4 i wouldnt be happy, but i dont believe in microsoft's existence in the video game industry, i believe they shouldnt be in it because i hate their infinite bank account that kind of ruins innovation. that is a seperate subject, i am happy to hear 720 is going to have a major downside

The problem is if people will really care, or if they will just buy it because it has the Xbox name on it. There's also the issue that Microsoft could gain some major support from big publishers looking to stamp out used game sales, giving them even more dominance over the market. But at the same time, if Sony and Nintendo were to convince retail gaming shops to take some sort of action against it then the Xbox brand could take a huge hit.

One thing to note is that if the XBox 720 can block used games, then it is also possible that the Wii U and PS4 could also block them. I personally wouldn't really care. I don't rent games and I rarely buy used games. I like having crisp, new games.

Ever bought a PC game? If you have than you know about entering the one-time use code that comes with the disc. It prevents the disk from being played on any other PC but the purchasers PC. I think it will probably work like that. Just think, it was Nintendo who use to marginalize gamers. No HD, no DVD. Now it's Microsoft. They will take huge losses because most people who buy consoles either rent or buy use games. Without vast accessibility to games ( gamestop, blockbuster, ect) they can start preparing for a loss.
