There are many obvious interpretations, so it communicates many things at once.
U is often an abbreviated reference to Universe. It communicates an ecosystem of interconnected products and services. Project cafe anyone?
U indicates a return. A Uturn. Nintendo didn't invent the concept of gaming on a screen. But they perfected it and birthed a renaissance in the '80s. Frim the Atari joystick with one button to the mess that was colecovision, Nintendo came out with a home console that could do arcade level graphics. It also introduced a revolutionary controller with a and b buttons and a D pad.
Then Nintendo came out with the super powered snes with special graphics and sound capabilities. And now standard shoulder buttons were introduced along with the now standard four button layout on the face.
Fast forward to n64 with its sgi crazy graphics that blew everyone away. The introduction of the analog stick for proper 3d control. And of course, the now ubiquitous "trigger" button.
Enter GameCube. Nintendos powerpc powered next gen system. Power to put ps2 to shame. Even the over-effort put forth by at-the-time-swimming-in-cash microsfoft could at best display graphics in par with the gsmecubes best with its more efficient PowerPC CPU, fast 1tsram, and artx derived gpu with custom capabilities hardwired in.
That's the Nintendo we all knew. That's the Nintendo that built its reputation on a catchphrase "now you're playing with power."
They always had superior firepower while pushing the envelope in gaming innovation.
That's Nintendo.
Then... A departure of sorts from its course.
Sacrificing next gen power in order to affordable bring the next revolution in game control, Nintendo released the Wii to the public. A console that did not take itself too seriously, was appealing to core gamers as well as those who wouldn't normally consider a games machine. However, it was also panned by those who preferred the kind of high tech forward looking power Nintendo was previously known for. Left only with Sony and Microsoft to put the "video" in "video games" and an increasing disparity in visual fidelity as the years wore on, and as ms and Sony copied the idea of motion controls and made competing systems available, the wii was relegated to the storage bin.
That was an aberration. the new audience Nintendo added to the gaming fold was not.
For the first time. Nintendo had innovation, but not raw horsepower.
Now, Nintendo has made a U turn to previous philosophy. Power. And lots of it.
From a power7 (that's the big boy leagues) supercomputer CPU to a very recent gpu reference spec (which is then customized and added to) to a ton of ram to a revolutionary control and interaction method, Nintendo is not only wise to keep the beloved "wii" name, but the "U" represents the other part of the equation: power.
The U is very clever.
In addition, it even looks like a smile
And thats what games are supposed to be about to begin with.
You can bet the name has been discussed after it was widely panned last year, but don't be surprised if they stick with it - and it grows on people.
I know many who skipped the wii generation. But many of those many are also selling their ps3s and 360s and kinects to get the wii u.

Meh, I'll believe in what ever I want to. The only god's I believe in is Din, Nayru, and Farore. You either don't understand the evil nature of this number, or worse, you could be a NON-BELIEVER - I shudder at the thought, you should make your way to the closest church immediately for purification.
