Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed to Kotaku that Wii U will feature friend codes. Reggie says that the Wii U friend codes will be a simplified version of what’s available on Wii and Nintendo 3DS. He believes that gamers will be happy with the changes that have been implemented, but he wouldn’t divulge any additional information.

“There are friend codes, but it’s not the existing friend code system. What do I mean by that? Here’s what I mean: you will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population. The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what’s happening today with Friend Codes.” (He declined to lay out the new Wii U friend code program just yet.)

Your topic title is a little misleading. I'm honestly under the impression Reggie doesn't know what hes talking about. Sure, he said we'd have friend codes, but what he described sounds nothing like them at all.

"friend code" doesn't necessarily mean numbers, it could be a synonym for gamertag, you know how reggie talks differently to most people :P

Well you suck Nintendo.

edit after reading everyones posts, hopefully code refers to a handle.

If Nintendo put number codes again then that really is the last straw. They're releasing an underpowered system for the next gen and will still be using an archaic online feature.

How are they going to attract back the core gamer when they really have just screwed up one of the most important to core gamers.

Arrrgh, Nintendo are so confusing.

Impossible , that would require Nintendo to understand online instead of them right now thinking its some kind of magical phenomenon that may or may not exist.

The main thing is that Nintendo doesn't want to be a copycat. Sure, they could just copy and past PSN/XBL, but then people would mock them for copying. They'd rather try to do their own thing, and I respect them for that.

I don't think he means the friend codes we know. Just looking at the miiverse pictures, I see usernames, which means that's most likely what we'll see

Friend Codes could also transform in Gamertags. That's most likely.

Does anyone remember Monster Hunter Tri's online system? That had IDs and it still worked pretty well.

Yeah I'm pretty sure these "friend codes" for Wii U is not going to use numbers, Reggie even said it that it was differernt then the Wii and 3DS friend codes, they are just using the name.

READ EVERYTHING HE SAYS PEOPLE!

First the bad news… maybe. Nintendo has not chucked the idea of requiring people to have friend codes, which, on the Wii, were 16-digit codes that people had to exchange before being linked as friends on the system.
And now the better news… "There are friend codes, but it's not the existing friend code system," Fils-Aime said. "What do I mean by that? Here's what I mean: you will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population. The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes." (He declined to lay out the new Wii U friend code program just yet.)
The problem I believe people had with the Wii version, I told Fils-Aime, is that adults who owned the system felt like, hey, if I'm an adult, treat me like an adult and let me friend people I've met online without having to call a person and exchange a code or something like that. "Agreed," Fils-Aime said.
"You feel like those people will be happier?" I asked.
"Yes, they will be."

So is Reggie trying say that friend codes are now the username of the player not 16 digit codes. If that's right then why not call it Nintendo Network id to avoid the confusion.
