There are friend codes on the Wii U, which is something Reggie Fils-Aime already confirmed. They are said to be simpler though, and Satoru Iwata has explained that:
…a function of the “Miiverse” will simplify the process of making friends with another user in the platform by eliminating the need to input Friend Codes.
And all I can think to say is, “Please don’t screw it up, Nintendo. Please don’t screw it up.”
