Does anyone know what resolution the Wii U will output over component? Will it be capable of 1080i/p or will they restrict it to 480p for some or all content?

There is no talk of this yet, but since it uses the same component cables as the Wii I think it will just be standard 480p.

In other devices the component cable can do 1080p,1080i,720p... ¿Why not the Wii U? I think is possible if Nintendo want. But why you want to use the component cables if the Wii U comes with the HDMI cable.

If the HDMI cable has HDCP then it's then component is the only way to record from it.

I'm using the official component cables, and both my TV and my Intensity shuttle are detecting it as a 1080p input

I don't have any free HDMI inputs on my AV receiver, so if I can get the same resolution through component cables I would rather use a component input instead of messing with an extra HDMI switch.

Component is capable of carrying up to 1080p, but my concern is that it may be limited due to restrictions from content providers. For example, HBO doesn't want people outputting 1080p component and recording it on an external device.

Same with my ps3 and 360.

My sony grand wega has original hdmi, so of course is uncompatable with ps3/360, so I use component.

I thought 1080p broadcasting was a bandwidth problem, so that explains why no TV shows are broadcasted in 1080p and only in 1080i or 720p

It is, but that limitation is primarily for broadcast TV. There is plenty of On Demand content available in 1080p.

It was refering to why HBO doesn't output in 1080p by component.

I'm sure it varies, but I found the picture quality on Xbox 360 over component VASTLY inferior to its picture over HDMI.

Granted, in some cases it makes games look more realistic as it degrades the image quality and crashes the contrast ratio, so it looks more like footage shot with a camera.

However if you want a pixel sharp image with a good contrast ratio, component is NOT the way to go in my experience. But it does depend a lot on both the console generating the signal and your specific TV.

HDMI certainly seems to handle longer distances better. I have a 7m HDMI from my Xbox 360 to the TV which works perfectly. But extend a component cable to 2m from 1m and you see ghosting appear.

I also read that the reason 1080p over component is not commonly available is down to the AACS content protection scheme not working over 1080p.

Although seeing as the Wii U doesn't play DVD or Bluray, I think it would be pretty tight for them to bother using content protection on the output so perhaps you WILL be able to capture 1080p over HDMI. Although I bet they do protect it due to supporting on-demand services for TV. This blocking your ability to record things is such a load of crap.
