According to a Wii U accessory package, the code name for the Wii U Gamepad is WUP-010. Just like it's predecessors, being the Wii RVL(Revolution), DS NTR(Nitro), Gamecube DLP(Dolphin) and others, this would mean that the true code name would derive from "WUP". My immediate assumption would be "Wii U Project" and not "Profect Cafe"or "Cafe" only.

Here's the package I was talking about (the code is near the bottom):

This would also put an end to those spec rumors from vgleaks.com, since they were calling the DEV Kits, "CAT-DEV" and not "WUP-DEV":

What do you guys think?
If you try to fail and succeed, which have you done?

Ummm, the only problem here is that there is no gamepad being sold seperately, so unless this is packed in the wii u. Box,nits fake.

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

This is an accessory package for the Gamepad, It does not include the Gamepad itself.

I still think it's code name was Project Cafe. They probably just didn't want the abbreviation to be any longer than usual.

If you think Smogon ban stuff

"Just because they can't beat it"

You clearly don't play OU

You clearly have no knowledge of the metagame

And you clearly don't deserve to have an opinion.

That is actually really interesting. I wish we knew what that for sure stood for, but it is cool to know.

It might be the gamepad's codename and not the console itself. I might be wrong, tough.

This could be true. WUP sounds like it'd stand for "Wii U Pad".

3DS is CTR
They're derivatives of past consoles now, Nintendo have changed their product coding practises.

Nope.

Take the 3DS for example:
  • The system itself is CTR-001
  • AR cards CTR-002
  • Battery CTR-003
  • Stylus CTR-004
  • Game Cards are CTR-005
  • etc.
So, the Wii U probably is WUP-001 and the Gamepad WUP-010. what comes between them I don't know...

Didn't think of that! It is really possible!
