I think everyone regardless of region or country will have to update the system. I very much doubt the console coming out 12 days later in the EU/UK and Australia and 20 days later in Japan is going to make a difference to that. I suspect it was for whatever reason a conscious decision on Nintendo's part to ship the console like that. It doesn't make sense that those aspects of the system software weren't ready in time.

Ohh how I envy you. Here in Australia getting 500kb a second would be a Godsend. :P

Man, we have 20kb a second internet over here in the middle of nowhere, it sucks hard.

I've been hearing that this Friday, gaming sites should be receiving there launch day update to check out miiverse and the wii games. Hopefully we can get some more news about this then.

The reasons are to ramp up hardware production before the software was done, and to increase the internet connectivity rate to close near 100% of consoles bought.
