Posted ImageShigeru Miyamoto explained that “We’re not going to sit here and say that our goal is to become the number one online gaming company, because that’s not our goal.”

For lovers of online gaming, that hurts to hear, but it’s not unexpected. Nevertheless, Miyamoto still believes that “internet connectivity is going to be very important for the system,” it’s just not their intention to use it in traditional ways.

He cites one possible feature as:

…being able to go online and perhaps see what game your friend is playing or see what TV they’re watching…

Miyamoto also believes “there are opportunities to take advantage of online to expand a local, same-room multiplayer experience by connecting that to the internet and making new types of play that way,” but leaves any specific examples to the imagination.

He finishes with the familiar spiel of “trying to create an online experience that’s welcoming to everyone.”

That could be tricky, Nintendo. Pleasing everyone ain’t easy. But, as always I will give you the benefit of the doubt because I can’t help but be suckered into illusions of grandeur.
