Makes you wonder if Nintendo only enabled USB1.0 support in the ethernet adapter driver.  It wouldn't make much sense, but it performing slower than WiFi DOESN'T make any sense. :(

No it doesn't.  Hopefully they address that at some point.  I wonder if it affecting the UK more than US though.  I haven't had any issues on Wifi on a 35Mb ISP connection.  Nothing that couldn't be atrributed to Nintendo's end.  I haven't bothered with capturing any statistics on it because it hasn't bothered me personally, but I might just to see if results vary that widely.

Unlikely, as like I said - I was testing directly from a local cache of the data.  So unless they did something odd with the UK Wii U firmware, I don't see how it could make any difference.

The problem with claims like this is we need to know exactly how fast its running.  How fast is your broadband?  How fast does it take to download the FIFA demo?

 

If the WiFi is performing poorly then its possible for the Ethernet to be faster, but that would mean your WiFi is performing REALLY poorly.

My friend had the same "problem" (Not really sure if this is a problem, though) and in the end he bought a cheap router and plugged the ethernet cable into that with the router literally sitting on the wii, then he got good speeds.

 

PS: My WiFi speeds are really strange, they go from really fast to really slow constantly, but they're never as slow as ethernet (on the wii u, that is).

Like I said though, my speeds are very consistent once you stick the proxy server in the middle, which I already needed anyway to get good speeds on the PS Vita.

 

People who are claiming "it works fine" or "it IS faster on Ethernet" I can guarantee have slow broadband and/or WiFi problems to begin with.  We already have several reports of the Wii U not exactly having the best WiFi reception for some people, but in my case I can tell from the router stats its achieving the maximum speed the Wii U is allowing.

 

As I said above, the proxy server takes the broadband connection completely out of the loop so I can prove without question the maximum speeds the Wii U can currently achieve and they are WELL below what you would expect for a console that has 25GB downloads on the eShop.

 

Interestingly the 3DS actually runs slower when using the proxy server, only managing 200K/s when if left working directly it averages around 800K/s.  That makes the Wii U situation even more embarrassing as the 3DS its only 802.11g compared to the Wii U at 802.11n, yet is able to achieve pretty much the same speed as the Wii U under the same configuration. (no proxy)

Dramatic improvement in performance!

 

I was able to get an average of 2.5MB/s from the USB adapter downloading to a HDD with the proxy enabled.  Without the proxy it fluctuates wildly but still seems much faster than before, I suspect it may average around the same but its harder to measure when it fluctuates so much.  Either way its a big improvement.

 

Downloading to internal memory still is garbage at an average of about 400KB/s, it did peak a few times at 1MB/s but then seemed to stall for a second or two (while it saved the data to the storage no doubt).  As previously suspected it seems the internal storage has very slow write speeds which is bottle-necking the download.  Its annoying as if I had known the built-in memory would be this bad I might not have bought the Wii U Deluxe.  This is particularly relevant as saving to a cheap USB memory stick performs almost as good as an external HDD, doing between 1-2MB/s even while playing LEGO City Undercover at the same time which is excellent compared to PS3/Xbox 360 which slow down to 500KB/s when background downloading.

 

One of the big problems with the Wii U is that the downloads seem to be split into many different smaller files which slows down things a lot as the nature of TCP/IP is you start off slow with each connection and gradually speed up as it detects you are capable of handling it.  So its far better to download one big file rather than several smaller ones.

 

The new background installing seems to be a huge problem too now as when its stalling the Wii U becomes unresponsive when trying to move between sections of the UI.  I just tried to view Download Management and its just sat there on the loading screen for about a minute.  The same thing happened when I tried to go into settings earlier, I had to wait several minutes for any response at all, the home menu just locked up.

 

There is one good thing though, background downloading/installing doesn't seem to affect actual retail disc playback at all.  Clearly the issue is downloading to the internal storage while also trying to read the OS from internal storage, is a bad idea.  I While in a disc based game you aren't really doing anything with internal storage (except when saving the game) so things work smoothly.

I was considering getting the adapter but my just about every pc in the house will max out to 1.5 m/s, most people in Australia dont have anything like 20 m/s internet but will have close to 100 m/s once the NBN network plan finishes rolling out which is expected to be done by 2021. However knowing the government we probably will only see a half of the project completed or well behind schedule. Whoa getting off track here.

Interesting post and very informative. In essence what that tells me is the problem is two fold. The Wii U's Wi-Fi is not as efficient as it could be and the write speed of the internal memory is quite slow. The latter is something that I haven't seen mentioned before but it obviously makes sense. I have the deluxe too but I still would have bought it as I wanted a black Wii U. I may have to consider investing in an external HD or USB drive in order to speed up any downloads.

Here's my unscientific results from my wi-fi versus lan adapter tests.

I'm on FTTC 40/20 Plusnet.

Re-tested my pc connection from my usual speed test site and get what I normally get from http://www.speedtest.net/:

25mb down
5.7mb up

This is usual for my connection.

For purposes of this test though, I had to use http://www.goesussex...band-speed-test as it was the only non flash test that I found which gave reasonably consistent results from the Wii U browser and the PC.

It reports my pc as having:

9mb down
3.7mb up

I can't really explain the difference, it could well be that there is a big difference in hops/networks/latency for each test. Either way, both are consistent so obviously will use the goesussex one for my tests, despite it being much lower than what I get in reality.

I've hunted hard and it's very difficult to find a non flash speed test that is reliable or consistent to use with the wii u browser, sorry.

The firsts tests were done on wi-fi, 12 speed tests were performed and I omitted both the highest and the lowest then averaged the remaining 10. I then downloaded Trine 2 (582mb) from the e-shop and recorded how long it took:

2.38 down
1.066 up
39 mins

The tests were repeated over the lan adapter wired connection:

4.8 down
1.32 up
12 mins

One thing I noticed about downloading from the e-shop is that the download would slow down as it progressed. In essence. it starts really fast and by the time you are about 60%, it is much slower and stays slow until finished. You can tell this thanks to the new firmware as you can actually view how fast downloads are coming and also the estimated time of arrival. This slowdown over time happens on both wi-fi and wired. Nintendo servers? Most likely.

I also did the tests using a fixed IP/gateway etc but it made no difference at all to any of the wired tests, they were essentially the same.

If anyone can find me a decent non flash speed test that gives me an accurate result on my PC, I will happily re-test using that for the wii u. Unfortunately, using goesussex means that the actual numbers above are pretty meaningless apart from one thing - and that's the difference between the numbers. In that respect, it's probably an ok representation of the difference between wi-fi and wired on the wii u.

If the latest tests are anything to go by the WiFi performance is much improved. 

 

If http://www.broadband...dchecker.co.uk/ is to be believed:

Wireless: 30739Kbit down, 3071Kbit up. (this is about right for 65Mbit WiFi, you only get around half the link speed due to overheads)

Wired: 59415Kbit down, 3277Kbit up.

 

Actual downloads from the shop however still remain below 20Mbit even when downloading to USB storage.  Its nice that Nintendo have added progress details now though (how many MB done so far out of total size) although it would be better if they included a MB/s measurement too.

 

Its STILL annoying that its limited to 65Mbit link speed as I would expect at LEAST 150Mbit and ideally 300Mbit capable.

My internet speed is awesome on the Wii U, I love it biggrin.png

Same here its 20mbit. with normal wifi (80% of my connection). 3ds however sucks to dl with.

 

with 32gb internal.

That makes sense over WiFi, its only capable to around 30-40Mbit at best, but on Ethernet it should be able to hit close to 100Mbit.

 

That said, even the PS4 only goes around 40Mbit.

Right before I moved I had 40Mbit+ (5-6 MB per sec) on my PS3, damn that was fast.

I can live with 20Mbit over Wifi though. Maybe upgrade it down the road. Im not sure what XB1 max is.
