If you mean it has an HDMI port then yes.

I heard the Wii U looks ugly on a computer monitor.

I honestly wouldn't know, but I heard the colors look "washed out" something about RNG.

I confirm. My current setup IS on my 24" computer monitor (Asus VW246H). It works wonders. If you want sound, your monitor needs to have built-in speakers (like mine). Otherwise, you'll only get the sound from the GamePad.

By the way, guys, HDMI also transports audio. ;)

My screen does not have internal speakers. is there any way to attach standard external speakers to the console?

If your monitor has a headphone port you should be able to use headphones for sound. Mine does and the sound works fine (on a ps3)

Here is what im doing in a similar situation as yours. I'm running the hdmi to my computer monitor (24" samsung led) for video, Then i use an audio cable that has a male headphone connection into the gamepad's headphone jack, and on the other end of that audio cable is a red/white plug that is connected to one of my surround sound's inputs. Works great :)

Well, from my experience you can really see how ugly console graphics look when you're playing on a monitor, especially when you're sitting up close, I'd much rather play on a TV, plus getting the audio is a pain when you're using a monitor.

I believe that there are devices that would extend the HDMI signal but let you plug in headphones or speakers in to get the sound from the HDMI cable...
