Noteworthy:
A 3D TV won't work for 3D Gaming on a PC.

I'm working towards building my own, my total bill is already at £1602. Still it's cheaper than buying a pre built PC :D

Ati (Well AMD now) 3D works with third party hardware and/or third party drivers so yes it is possible. Nvidia sort of did the 3D in the method of using there expensive priority hardware & monitors equipped to work with the select glasses so not so open as AMD. (Edit: Not saying it is not possible on Nvidia. TV's work with them as well, but in terms of monitors and some of the other stuff required it can be a bit more less open. Plus I can't really comment on their priority stuff in quality so not sure how it will compare).

Nvidia works on my tv with the tv's glasses (any my glasses of preference the Xpand X103's). One thing to note, as you are using a hdmi cable 1080p at 60fps in 3d in each is eye is not possible over hdmi. You can do 720p @60fps in each eye or 1080p @ I believe 30fps in each eye (this is assuming your using a side by side method or similar).

My understanding is it is quite the opposite, AMD limits and Nvidia doesn't, I however have not looked into it for a while.

I am going off information of about 2010/11 information on both. I am sure they had a few minor updates and/or improvements on both ends. Though at the end of the day their both crap. Mainly for how little support games are in 3D or just not worth it in the end. Hell, consoles games hardly support 3D even. Meh, 3D is cool and all for movies, but more of a fad in gaming so not really keep up with everything. Though from my understanding in terms of freedom Nvidia 3D Vision for monitors and such is very priority based and AMD leaves it up to the hardware and possible drivers provided. Because there was all that crap about USB latency and yada yada. I guess that the end of the day it is just it works for either. (shrugs)
