I don't even know a newly released Atari game so i'm not surprised.
That would be because the out of control balooning cost of game development forced them to seek the greener pastures of mobile game development, until they found out that the mobile myth of mobiles soon taking over gaming was, just that, a myth perpetrated by the gaming media and propaganda peddling mobile devs and publishers, and they quickly went out of business selling practically nothing despite releasing a rather killer mobile line up of the best games atari ever released, from baldurs gate to daggerdale.

I still don't understand how gaming pulls in more dollars than film and TV put together yet there are companies closing left right and centre. I put it down to bad management.
Gaming has expanded quickly and huge number of people/companies have invested. Many older companies have also failed to adapt to the changing market (Nintendo being one of them in some ways). Currently Nintendo is relying solely on Mario to survive (just look at how the poor 3ds sales where remedied), what happens to Nintendo if nothing changes but Mario losses popularity? Well they go into liquidation, unless of course they can pull in the casual crowd like they did with the Wii.

Because of the ridiculous business model thats been crucifying gaming has gone psychotically out of control.
Every game has to be a blockbuster epic, or some bizzare 'student project' for a publishing house to pick it up. Then in order to actually make any money it has to make millions of sales.
One non hit is enough to end a lot of companies right now.

Indeed a lot of gaming is beating it all on some AAA titles. Sadly many games are ignored by larger companies that would require much lower budgets and thankfully have recently started being released (at least on pc thanks to the strong indie scene). Lower budgets does not mean the game has to be any worse, just look at countless opinions on Torchlight 2 (which has eclipsed 1 million sales on pc alone) vs Diablo 3, or the massive success that Minecraft has been (though I really don't like the game myself)., Legend of Grimrock, or how well Journey has been received etc. As for requiring millions of sales, that would depend on so many factors that would vary from company to company so I am not going to comment beyond saying if all AAA titles needed to sell millions how are series like F.E.A.R, Dead Space etc able to have multiple sequels. Hopefully next gen sees a more balanced approach to gaming with some more variety in games size, budgets and prices, which is something the further move towards digital will no doubt help with (the notion afterall of near on all full retail games selling more or less at the same price point on release is beyond silly).

Y U NO LIKE MINECRAFT?????
But yeah, agree with you completely, and i am so, SOOOOO glad to see the indie scene rising with the ability to seperate publisher from distribution finally realized. This is the best thing for every genre and production value. Even AAA games. Once they go back to being a more rare treat, their quality will improve 10-fold, they will become special again.
