Technology company AMD (supplier of graphics hardware for the Xbox 360) is claiming that the Xbox 360's successor will be capable of producing the kind of visual detail seen in James Cameron's Avatar, as reported on examiner.com via the August issue of Official Xbox Magazine US.

Cramming the kind of technology it took to render every frame of the eyeball-searing Avatar into a console within the next year or so sounds impossible, but AMD is claiming the next Xbox will launch with this within reach.

AMD would not confirm it was actually working on the next Xbox but director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, has said that gamers have a lot to be excited about. Beyond visual fidelity Robison claims that the AI and physics capabilities of the next generation will allow for every pedestrian in an open-world title like GTA or Saints Row to be an individual character with a unique personality. This would mean NPCs would react in a whole host of new and different ways to in-game actions.

Of course, this is far from the first time this sort of hyperbole has been tossed out into the public. Gamers have been teased with promises of Toy Story graphics for the PS2 and Toy Story 2 graphics for the original Xbox before.

This proves that the Xbox 720 won't render that kind of graphics.

Whenever the 'other' companies mention their graphical capabilities they ALWAYS lie! They'll show off something that is prerendered or will mention how powerful a console is when it's NOT doing any work. Then when the end of the generation comes by and you never see those graphics again, nobody cares! They're too busy hating on the Big Guy!!

I have no doubt that next gen consoles could demonstrate those graphics, but it would definitely not be real-time. Nor do I see any long cutscenes with that kind of power usage, unless M$ wants the RROD again...

I don't see this happening unless Micro$oft wants it to cost $1000 dollars.

The Xbox 720 costs $2700.
It's about the size of your house.
The online costs $130 a month.

"Microsoft's Xbox 720 did not sell well, in fact, it makes Sony's PS3 being sold at a loss look like an epic win. At least the PS3 sold millions...

Microsoft is still looking for it's fifth customer..."

You know, it's actually possible for this to be somewhat true...
Because if you think hard enough, the kinect is pushing the Xbox lifespan out further.

We might not even see leaks of the Xbox 720 until 2015. While it might not be Avatar level, it could be getting close.

I agree with Wertville the Kinect will expand the Xbox 360 lifespan. So we wont be seeing another Xbox for a while. Plus if it does have Avatar like graphics that means it will be expensive for Microsoft to make which means the next Xbox will be very expensive.

Ok let's look in a brief history Sega released the Sega Genis(PS360) a much more powerful system then the NES(WII) to compete with NES and then Nintendo released the SNES(WII U) a more powerful system then the Genis. After that Sega released the Sega Saturn(PS4,720) AND YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORYYY.

It's not even what the console would cost that worries me, Microsoft can sell it at a loss if they want. It's how much it would cost to create software of that graphical calibre.Games are already expensive as it is. £49.99 for the triple A titles, what will the next gen cost £79.99? That's too close to a hundred pounds for my liking.

It would be like the old days of gaming where games cost a fortune.
