Examiner

Previously, we released an article that reported on the rumors of Microsoft's next generation console, the Xbox 720, eliminating the use of used games. In this article, it was stated that Microsoft intends to supply physical copies of titles on the Xbox 720 with a one-time activation code, rendering the physical product useless after the initial activation.
In response to this, yesterday GameStop sent out a warning to Microsoft regarding the idea of eliminating the use of used games, via Bloomberg. “We know the desire to purchase a next-generation console would be significantly diminished if new consoles were to prohibit playing pre-owned games, limit portability or not play new physical games.”

Obviously, GameStop will be severely impacted if Microsoft chooses to eliminate the used game market with the release of the Xbox 720. Upon the initial announcement of this rumor, GameStop saw a sizable drop in stock price.
The implementation of a feature to eliminate used games on the Xbox 720 has not been commented on by Microsoft as of yet.

Game developers to Gamespot: "your overly aggressive selling of used games could cripple our ability to make games".

Really I actually blame companies like Gamespot/EB Games more then Microsoft for this, I can't try and buy a new game from one of there stores without them trying to sell me the second hand copy instead (though I have now stopped shopping at there stores). Gamespot/EB Games along with others have been pushing the game industry into a corner through there practices and expected no ramifications.

The only time i go there is when im specifically looking to pick out an old game i missed.

And even then, thats after i go through the clearance/bargain bin of other stores.

I have no desire to be constantly bugged by some idiot who has no idea what hes talking about trying to tell me 'facts' he constantly gets wrong in an inane attempt to show me his non mastery over the subject of videogames so he can attempt to peddle crap i dont want.

Wow, i hate the gamestop experience so bad it looks like im pro no used games... Im not, i like used games, buying anyways, i never sell... Just, not from gamestop, i freaking hate having to go to gamestop.

I really don't think Microsoft will bother about a two bit games shop chain...

I don't think so either, but I do believe it will hurt next gen systems that choose to do this. Not only will Gamestops close like rapid fire or have to restructure, but also companies like GameFly will go under. Lots of jobs are at stake, and I know people who never buy new games. So less people will own systems and less games in general will sell. One can argue if someone bought halo used for like 10 bucks back in the day, that could of got them into it enough to buy all the sequels at full price.

If these rumors are true, it's unlikely that MS or Sony will totally disable used games, but probably require that users purchase an online pass. I'm okay with that... it will mean that Gamestop can't charge as much and that $10 or so will go back to the developer where it belongs.

Weather it's morally wrong or right, the fact remains, it's a very big part of the industry now and a lot of people are gonna be butthurt if they can't buy used games. Oh and just for the record all my games are brand new and I only buy brand new.
