It looks...weird? That touchpad may even be a screen with the way it looks! It looks like theres a speaker under it so...could be!

EDIT: A trusted source (by trusted, i assume they mean developer?) has confirmed to IGN that it is an early prototype of the controller, so its likely different now.

IGN additionally noticed a possible button to the upper-right of the d-pad which could be the rumored share button, AND the glowing rod at the top of the controller which could be Playstation Move related. Hmmmm...interesting.

Prototype or not, can't say I'm a fan at the moment. As far as the touchpad, it's almost as if Sony put it there just so they can say "Look! We've done something different and innovative to our controller." The placement and size of the touchpad doesn't look readily convenient and accessible for gaming to me. I can see it being useful when browsing through menus and such, but nothing worthwhile on the gameplay front. Maybe the final build will look more appealing and make more sense to me.

Does anyone know what sort of functionality the PS4 controller will have? Is it a touchpad, (single, multi, gestures?) Even a startup company has a better looking prototype.... OUYA.

Still ugly, but looks loads more comfortable just at first glance. I wish they didn't use translucent plastic, blech.

Yeah that's the dev unit, the final look in the retail pics looks nice for OUYA, but not to get off topic. I am really curious as to what sony has planned for functionality.

Yep, it's basically a laptop mousepad with limited multitouch support (two points). It also clicks. Like an Apple trackpad on the MacBookPro.

I like the controller, I think the space in the middle is too small to be an actual screen. So it's likely just a regular touch pad like the Vita has with it's rear touch pad. The control sticks look a little weird, and I prefer the older PSone - PS3 style d-pad rather than the Vita style d-pad this one has. But it's only a prototype, but it still looks pretty good.

I cant see that touch pad being utilized well by anything other than shovelware party games....

They shouldve just stick with the normal classic design that they always have, no need to deviate, they're better off staying true to their roots... cuz when they deviate things get messy..**cough move, wonderbook**
