#25064 Hello!

Posted by Bill Cipher on 30 August 2011 - 07:31 PM

I suppose life simulation is my favorite. But typically on consoles I enjoy adventure/RPG games the most.

I haven't branched out. On the Wii I stuck with only names I knew, and I suppose that might be the problem. But I don't know, it's also how long games keep me occupied. Melee was fun for me for all of the years it was out. Brawl just wasn't.

Yeah, most of the wii's best games were small little titles. It was because of these that My Wii is my Favorite home console. That, and it has BIT TRIP.

#24922 Could "The Conduit" be Nintendo's halo?

Posted by Narcidius on 30 August 2011 - 11:32 AM

So everyone pretty much agrees on this front (that the Conduit simply cannot fit the bill of flagship FPS franchise for a Nintendo system)... but I'm actually rather interested in the Individual "why's" (especially the ones people are reluctant to mention).  Some seem to think that Nintendo is incapable of courting a real "hardcore" FPS at all, while others simply object to the Conduit as an individual franchise.

Personally, I'm in the latter camp.  I think Nintendo has been home to some of the greatest FPS of all time (Goldeneye/Perfect Dark) in earlier console cycles, and I see no reason at all why they cannot do the same thing this next cycle.  The Conduit, while fun, is a copycat game on every level, from story to play mechanics and everything in between.  This does not mean, however, that Nintendo could not court a real quality, innovative studio - one that could produce the "next big thing" in FPS gaming.  Lots of people are afraid to use "hardcore" on these boards as a descriptor, because the reaction is often so severe (for one reason or another)... but really, people, we know what is meant by the term if we are being even slightly charitable.  Halo is a deep, innovative experience.  It is well crafted and well polished.  It does a lot of very interesting and very unique things with online multiplayer, and with open-world combat.  People that play competitively and spend lots of money on services and DLC are VERY into this game.  It's fun to play, in part and as much as it pains us to admit it, for the same reason that Facebook is fun to use... because it's "cool" enough that everyone uses it.  I think that Nintendo can, and that Nintendo SHOULD, play host to a game that does just this - captures the hardcore market with a fresh, innovative approach to the stale FPS formula, and provides the market with an experience that IT thinks is "cool".  I know this is distasteful to a lot of people... but entertainment companies really do have to pay attention to what consumers want in terms of theme, tone, and style.

That doesn't mean that Nintendo should sell out on the kind of game that they want to make (that would make for some really clunky and awkward gaming), but it sure as first-person-shooting does mean that they need to court a studio that does want to make this kind of game.

You guys can keep the horse. I have a dragon! *crazy flamethrowing flight ensues* "WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!"

Yaaaaaa, good for you. xD

This horse is way better anyway. Who could resist this beautiful face? Will we ever find his owner? ;-;

What did I miss? I've been at the local animal shelter where I've been helping to take care of poor abused and injured horses. Giving them food and water, bathing them, and giving them love.

Nice try. Your love for horses doesn't prove that this one is yours. :P

#24768 Article: Apple To Beat Wii U To Tablet Gaming Market?

Posted by Wertville on 29 August 2011 - 12:48 PM

"If only Nintendo was willing to make iOS games (at a competitive price), maybe we would see Zelda iOS or Super Mario iPad Brawl. Maybe Apple should just buy Nintendo, since they’re already making such similar products…"

If Nintendo made iOS games...the quality would diminish greatly. "Zelda iOS" I prefer to actually have buttons to play a game like Zelda. "Super Mario iPad Brawl" Seriously? ...seriously. This is a bad idea if I've ever heard it. You couldn't play a game as complicated (it's technically complicated with all the buttons and whatnot) on a iPad. -_-

You're forgetting one important point that destroys all of their gaming credibility: They got Smash Bros. and Super Mario mixed up. I expect workoholic parents to make that mistake, not people writing articles... ON GAMING.

FYI, I didn't read the article and wont comment on it. For obvious reasons.

#24744 Article: Apple To Beat Wii U To Tablet Gaming Market?

Posted by Hank Hill on 29 August 2011 - 08:36 AM

Why do people seem to think that Nintendo is trying to compete with Apple? o_o All that article had shown is how idiotic GameRant's journalism is. Let's quote some things from them, shall we?

"iPad AirPlay Mirroring in iOS 5 releases this fall and will offer tablet-to-TV gaming similar to the Wii U a year before the Nintendo’s console is set to be released. Is this Apple’s big push into console gaming?"

Anybody with a brain could tell you that if Apple did anything gaming, it'd be insanely overpriced. The iPad AirPlay requires a Apple TV and a iPad, right? The cheapest iPad is what...$500? And then the Apple TV attachment is only an extra $100...

"#1: The Wii U tablet controller includes the classic gaming controller features such as analog sticks, triggers and buttons that the iPad 2 is lacking but it certainly looks like Apple is set to meet Nintendo head on in the tablet controller gaming market and it’s Apple going into this tablet gaming battle with a big head start.

#2: Apple has the installed base advantage as they have already sold over a million iPad 2 devices and over a million Apple TVs that come complete with the App Store library full of games. The Wii U isn’t due for release until sometime in 2012 and all that stands between those Apple TV and iPad 2 owners’ and tablet-to-TV gaming is a free firmware update expected to arrive this Fall."

Let's simplify what they said. #1: The Wii U has all the control options the iPad 2 doesn't, but Apple is ready to beat Nintendo. That's fanboyism at its best...

#2: So...they've sold over a million iPad 2 devices and over a million Apple TVs, so that's a ABSOLUTELY NINTENDO-CRIPPLING FANBASE, RIGHT? And yet, the Wii has sold over 87.57 million units (as of June 30th, 2011) I'm not seeing much of a contest there.

"This similarity in systems will certainly affect game developers choice of platform when creating their next game. At very least, the ability to port games from Wii U to the iOS 5 AirPlay mirroring and vice versa will seem like an obvious path to take and a very cost-effective one at that."

Cost-effective my butt. The Wii U is at the most going to be $400. (Although, in my opinion, it'll most likely be $350) and the iPad is $500, with a $100 Apple TV attachment. And if the Wii U discs are 25 gigs each, how the heck are you going to port THOSE to a iPad? It'd take 3 days to download. -.- "The similarity in systems will certainly affect game developers choice of platform when creating their next game." So, at the time, Nintendo has sold almost 90 million units of the Wii, while the iPad 2/Apple TV only has somewhere over a million sales? If I were developing a game...I'd go for the one with the bigger sales/fanbase. (In other words...Nintendo.)

"Maybe Apple should just buy Nintendo, since they’re already making such similar products…"

Maybe Sony should buy Microsoft because their controllers are similar. Maybe HP should buy out dell because the ENTER key looks similar. This alone is troll logic.

All in all, this really just shows how anti-Nintendo GameRant is, and why have, for the most part, stopped reading their blog a LONG time ago.

#24194 is nintendo being cheap?

Posted by Biohazard on 26 August 2011 - 01:01 AM

funny to me now that there are reports of the Wii U dev kits having problems... why you might ask because of Nintendo using CHEAP PARTS! so i guess it is what it is.

That was a long time ago. The developers were using unfinished and underclocked kits. If you were talking about the 001.net rumor, the problems stem from the controller, not the overall hardware! It's still going through prototype phases and we are still eons away from its projected release! Besides, all consoles use relatively cheap and outdated hardware, anyway. The Xbox 360's and PS3's hardware used 5-6 year old graphics cards. Like I mentioned before, switch to PC if you're so damned concerned about tech!

#22358 Miitropolis

Posted by Ponkotsu on 17 August 2011 - 07:29 AM

Not to just randomly bump this topic, but some news hit over the past weekend that ties into my thoughts in this thread.

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2011/0190062.html

Nintendo has recently filed for a patent on a 'massively single player' game experience, where players would be able to exchange content and information online passively for a dynamic in-game world experience, while the core of your gameplay experience is primarily single-player, and you could only interact more directly with people you'd friended and chosen to actively connect with.

People have suggested largely that this is either a) something possibly Animal Crossing related or B) something virtual online Mii world related, like an essential Nintendo answer to Playstation Home, as Miyamoto himself has discussed. Hence, relevance in this Miitropolis thread.

While Nintendo's still largely been a bit quiet for comfort on the online functions and features front for the Wii U and 3DS - though we did get Netflix and Nintendo Video, as well as word of more Mii games and StreetPass Mii gaming content coming since this thread's initial creation - things like this show that Nintendo's quietly planning something interesting and very ambitious to catch up and easily compete with the competition's online features, as EA has recent given strong testimony to as well. Hopefully this will indeed lead to something in the vein of Miitropolis between the Wii U and 3DS.

Given the sudden, unexpected, rapidfire release of Netflix and Nintendo Video that we saw, as well as the continued growth of eShop content, I'm hoping we'll be seeing some more major 3DS online functions out of the blue sooner than later. Instant messaging, expanded friend list/profile content, eventually the ability to link our 3DSes - like our Wii Us - to a single online profile for stat and achievement collection, Nintendo social networking, compatibility with things like Twitter and Facebook, and more. Considering that a ton of social networking compatible features were just unveiled for the Vita at Gamescom, it definitely wouldn't hurt for Nintendo to get things like that going on the 3DS with sudden and unexpected patches over the coming months to cover as much competitive ground as they can. It probably wouldn't take much time or consume many resources to make such apps as is, though we can already use Twitter, Twitpic, Facebook, and things like that through the 3DS browser. Not sure about the likes of Foursquare, but that would certainly be doable.

As it stands, for all the 'later this year'/'later this summer' talk, Netflix and Nintendo Video made very sudden and welcome appearances, and the only updates we know for certain that are on the way this year at this point are eShop demos, which will be able to passively download to our systems while in sleep mode, and additional StreetPass Mii Plaza content. Instant messaging and video recording may come yet too, as there has been talk of those in-demand features as well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an Activity Log update to add a full additional page for each game when you tap on them to check out achievements, since given the system's current small library, it wouldn't be hard to release patches for all the currently available 3DS games to add achievements or connect existing in-game achievement systems (Like in Street Fighter, Samurai Warriors, Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions, Resident Evil, and more.) so you could track that sort of thing in the Activity Log and prepare the system for that kind of data collection to eventually be able to connect to a personal online profile in the future and upload achievement records and data there. Updates for DSiWare, 3DSWare, and Virtual Console releases to add such features could do a lot for replay value and overall sales, too, especially helping little titles like Gamebridge's awesome GO Series games. It'd be another feature people wouldn't be able to complain about Nintendo lacking, which seems like an inevitable coming standard on the Wii U anyway that they should get on enabling on the 3DS as soon as possible too. They've already created a thriving metagame environment with the likes of StreetPass connection gaming, and achievements, Miitropolis, and some kind of general online SpotPass passive connection metagaming with our friend lists would be ideal additions.

At any rate, not a mere idle bump - some concrete positive evidence here that Nintendo is up to something with their patents that distinctly connects with this idea. Pretty exciting.
