#268162 [Discussion] Nintendo Land

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 23 January 2014 - 05:15 AM

Hey there guys!

Been awhile since I made one of these failed Discussion topics. Perhaps using Resident Evil and Final Fantasy and hoping to get some meaningful discussion on a general level wasn't going to get people to communicate, so I'm going to try a more Wii U oriented approach this time around.

This time, it's all about Nintendo Land! I think it would be rather joyous to see how everyone rips into what is perhaps the most controversial launch title the Wii U ever received.... err, that might go to Mass Effect 3: Special Edition, now that I think about it...

Unlike previous discussions, this isn't a speculation on what a title could be like. It already is a game, so this is more or less a place for people to review their experiences, and talk about what they should've taken out, what they should've put in, and whether or not we feel as a community that Nintendo should make another one.

As usual, this is a formal topic. No trolling, bickering, tearing into other people's posts or shagging the neighbour's dog to prove a point. Everything is opinionated and for the sake of meaningful discussion.

--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

So what exactly was 'Nintendo Land'

Really, am I really doing this?

I feel it's important we are all on the same page here before we even start, even if this one is as basic as putting milk onto eggs. You don't know how much milk I put on my eggs. I used to think it was a lot. Then Mig and PWN showed me I know less than Jon Snow. Anyway:

- Wii U Launch title

- Party Category

- Purposely made to showcase certain ways the Gamepad could be used, in both a 1 player setting and a 5 player setting

- One of Nintendo's first efforts in producing a HD Nintendo title

- Probably belongs to the "Mii" series of games. Probably

- The whole game referenced to other Nintendo serials in the form of a theme park setting

That's the basic gist of the game without getting opinionated. The game was essentially a set of various mini-games, with rewards and a hub world.

And this is the part where Auzzie makes us set up a tent and roll our eyes

I brought marshmallows

Where to begin with opinions? I think I'll go with where I think they went wrong, and then proceed to what I think they could've done to make it more appealing.

--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---

Nintendo, ever the Innovator

Or so they tell me

But you know what, I reckon they went overboard. Nintendo Land is so centrally focused on the Gamepad, it leaves little to be desired in terms of awards and gameplay. I think what sucks even more is that they focused a lot on how the Gamepad is used in a multi user setting. Both of these have massive drawbacks and oversights.

To begin with, a lone player can only play 7 out of the 10 attractions, and not everyone has the ability to gain a 2nd player. For a lone player, this is quite the bummer. Paying full price for something that doesn't have all of its functions available to you is quite a bad taste in the mouth.

And I feel that, because so many of the games were focused on playing with the Gamepad, there was little room to create an attraction that was just a 'jump in, have fun' effect. It's not like Nintendo was forced into making sure every attraction had a Gamepad gimmick. But they did, and so I didn't feel any love for any particular attraction. Actually, I was hoping there would be an attraction I would keep slugging at the more I played it, but it never happened.

Awards felt random at times. Not all the time, but sometimes. Stamps were okay, given that the attractions were short. I'm used to having a game where there are rewards aplenty, both bare and hidden.

Most of the attractions felt like I was strolling along, with next to no difficulty scaling to make it harder and to work harder at it. I think strangely enough it was the Pikmin attraction that provided a challenge every now and then.

The game overall felt content-less. Rushed even. And the thing about it that will always rustle my jimmies is that it was something Nintendo actually tried to hype up. They went and used a pretty big chunk of their E3 presentation on it.

Well, now that I vented out on the things why I didn't like Nintendo Land overall, here's some things I think could of made it a lot more amazing.

Nintendo Land 2/Super Nintendo Land/Nintendo Landmaster

That moment when I was gonna do a Snoop reference too

Online

Perhaps a crucial point. I'm not necessarily talking online multiplayer, although I wouldn't mind that. I feel that leaderboards and DLC are standard fare. Considering that these are attractions where score can be calculated, leaderboards aren't a bad idea, even the ability to challenge other people to beat your score to be fun. Heck, you could probably download a ghost run of whatever that other guy did and see if you can improve upon it.

As for DLC, I would honestly have had a couple of free packs available in the first two months, each with an attraction and more rewards added, and then whenever Nintendo decides they made a bright spark of an attraction, add them in cheaply. I wouldn't mind paying $5 for an extra attraction (keep in mind, I'm Australian so it would be even cheaper for you guys). They probably sat around a table for days trying to figure out which franchises they wanted in, and Takamaru looks like they decided to wild card the last one.

You could also get a lot more attractions this way. A lot more. They could probably find ways to make the single player games into multiplayer ones as they figure them out.

Also one other thing I'll talk about later.

* Attraction Themes based on an Actual Game Entry

I believe it would've been cooler for each attraction to based on an actual game, as opposed to the serial. Say for example, Mario Chase. An actual Game Entry would be using Super Mario Galaxy, as an example. The level would come of all space oriented, and they could probably recreate actual mechanics of the game to spice up the metagame here and there.

There's also the other thing: Nintendo probably felt compelled to have only one attraction per serial. However, if they did base them on the individualities of a title, then they could easily do multiple entries. For example: a Wind Waker attraction wouldn't likely play out like a Minish Cap attraction... and so, from either the get go or through DLC, you can have more.

Also, Elite Beat Agents, Kururin, Golden Sun, Sin and Punishment, Starfox, Starfy, Pokemon, Kirby, Kid Icarus, WarioWare, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Captain Rainbow etc.

AI

Seriously, the least they could of done with the Mario, Luigi and Animal Crossing attractions was incorporate AI so you could play them solo. They could of made it so you'd have to deal with brutally good ones or pathetic ones if you wanted.

Rewards, Collections and Costumes

Basically, a reward is a reward. Some 1 second admiration item you can place in your hub if you wanted to. Some of them you'd get for beating an attraction in various ways (stamps, essentially). Others you get from finding in the attraction, or cashing out to Monita.

Now a Collection. That's what happens when you get a lot of rewards that belong in the same group, though they don't all necessarily came from the same attraction. The thing is, the ones that aren't the stamps, they can be accumulated. You could have 30 Power Stars for all I care. From there, you could trade your excess items for ones you don't have, with other people online. All in the sake of completing your various collections.

And Costumes! They aren't part of any Collection, but you can still accumulate and trade them around. But now you don't have to stick with those weird ones that Miis get dressed in anymore. I was also going to say that depending on the attraction, your costume has a unique ability so you can try to get an edge on the leaderboards, or just try to beat the level, but that could be taking it too far.

(Sorry, no cross-dressing. Considered 'abnormal')

* Jukebox

Be the master of your own music lineup. At any time go to the pause menu and setup your own tracklist. You can unlock more as you play the attractions and there might even be some hidden ones to go find. It's like the CD's in Brawl except without the smashing and the specials and the Conveyor belt custom stages.

Devil Mode

For when you feel that attractions have become too easy. Up the difficulty in whatever way you see fit. Watch, as the number and rarity of rewards become lovely when you can manage to beat an attraction.

Invaders

Mii's wearing outfits of third party characters will loiter around your hub world and challenge you to beat their combined score over several challenges. Do it and they give you that third party character's costume.

And sometimes, some big guy in a Nintendo bad guy suit will make a mess of your hub world for the lolz. How evil indeed.

Feel free to post what you think should've been in Nintendo Land, or in a new one in the future. As usual, this is supposed to be a mature discussion between gamers, so no trolling each other.

#267923 Why 2013 has been the worst year in gaming.

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 21 January 2014 - 04:39 PM

Gonna have to disagree as well. 2013 was a very good gaming year for me, producing some of my favorite games.

We aren't discussing game titles here. The title needs to be changed to tell people that this topic is about how terrible the actual business practices in game development have become, with 2013 being a low point on that matter.

The games have without a doubt been great.

#267800 Thoughts on Nintendos next home console

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 21 January 2014 - 04:27 AM

Well i actually think those that say the gamepad doesnt intrest them are the one that have NEVER played the console. Nintendo problem is they do design their systems around an experience somethng you wont "GET" until you pick it up and play it. i actually think the gamepad is a gamechanger and i play games on gamepad more than i do the tv it is just a convenience in a house with 3 kids and a wife. I think the problems is Nintendo havent done enough to justify the system manily the gamepad. We were told the system can support two gamepad and we havent seen one game built around that yet (correct me if i am wrong).  Nintendo marketing have been HORRIBLE i do think upping the marketing will help a lot which i hope they do this year ( they have said they will) but words from them mean nothing to me at this point.  So yes i do think this "FAILURE" if you were to call it that SHOULD wake nintendo... SHOULD i hope. Notice the trends, spend some money, and move a little outside their box. Manly all Nintendo needs to do is balance. Bring n64/gamecube games to VC, give us the ip's we havent seen (starfox, f-zero), and new ones, and invest in more studios because 3rd parties have made it clear you are last on their list.

I think there are plenty of owners, myself included, who don't think too big of the Gamepad's functions. I don't believe it to be as game changing as you say. I don't think all of those ideas are going to help the Wii U either. But never mind that, this is a thread to discuss what we'd like Nintendo to do with their next console, not the Wii U.

The first thing to address what the next console should do. We're now in a market where there are plenty of people content with using cheaper mobile devices like tablets and phones. I think any hardware developer should abuse that at this point, and get their systems to have some sort of connection with those devices. At least, it will no longer be against that market, as it can be integrated. As crap as they are, the PS4 tried with Companion Apps. The apps themselves have proven a craptasm, but the concept of having the console connected to whatever phone you are using for a bit of an edge could become a bonus if done right. It should be at least capable of all multimedia functions currently accessible to all consoles. People will complain about one or two functions and it can have the deciding vote for whatever reason goes through a person's mind. The less you skimp on, the more that the games will be the decider becomes true.

Another thing they should be doing is having a well integrated network. The whole shebang. Miiverse quickly lost it's relevance and just became an overly modded drawing board. Users should be allowed to create communities, and have their own control of what happens in the community. The online store should be easier to navigate and all titles should be downloadable. Everything should be clear and not based on these 'channels and icons' design crap. The online should be sufficient and not restricted for third party developers.

I'm not gonna ask for the best hardware spec wise, but it should be decent enough and easy to develop on so that no third party can use the excuses that they've gotten away with the Wii U. If it can do that and run as quietly and as cooled as the Wii U, that's a bonus.

The controller shouldn't force new control designs. It should be like your standard controller, and if they want to add something to it, it needs to be simple, easy to access and this time around, not painful to one's neck. A nice long battery life and a nice feel to the hands.

The software, and more specifically the launch software. Nintendo has tried to let third parties have first dibs on their launches twice, and both times the result has been less than stellar. Nintendo doesn't have good relations with third parties to begin with so they should focus more on rolling out first party titles at a breakneck speed for the first year.

What a launch lineup shouldn't look like:

2-3 first party titles that aren't particularly stellar

5 party titles

4-8 major third party titles of which most are gimped

What a launch lineup should look like:

4-5 first party titles, 3 of which can be experimental and attempting to highlight new controls, 1-2 of which are solid Game of the Year material. Ambitious, I know, but the sooner they can hold ground with their own Nintendo quality, the better. Wouldn't hurt for one of these titles to come off as 'too adult for Nintendo'. They should broaden what kind of games they think they are allowed to make.

2-3 party titles, no gimping

Any relevant major third party titles at the time, no gimping

1-2 console exclusive third party titles, less focus on trying to be a game that can only be made for the console and more focus on a game that the other consoles wish they could play

A first party title, online only, attempts to put Nintendo on the MMO map. Free to download. If it has that Nintendo quality with a stellar performance, people aren't gonna mind shelling out for DLC add-ons.

So what kind of titles are we talking about here? Here's a few things they could do.

- Mario Kart 9: It's been proven, people get hyped over Mario Kart. I don't know why, but they do. And so, one of their launch titles should be one with known online capabilities and likeability. They'd also be in a position to expand this game's life through DLC. The first DLC pack should be tracks that are a little out of Mario's way if you get what I mean, just to build even more hype.

- Nintendo VS Capcom: Well, what could sell a system more than the hypest fighting game never to have existed or been confirmed. Seriously, if they did this, if they did this, the only thing left to wait on is Arcsys VS Capcom and then I can die happy. So bloody happy.

But seriously, this stuff could easily replace UMvC3 as the hypest fighting game if done right. Capcom likes to make reachable complexities in their fighting games. You tag team that with the rather unorthodox fighters of Nintendo and all you need to do is order a pizza.

- Golden Sun/Earthbound HD: Yeah, I just suggested that. I just suggested that they should port a 2D RPG classic from older hardware into a HD model of itself. I just suggested something that would make every old person on this forum cringe so hard that their final exams would shrink. This is the kind of cringe that would be turned upside down and into joy the second Nintendo release any form of media of it onto the public. And you know it. Deep down you know that this is the kind of game you want, and you don't even realise it. You refuse to let it into your soul because you can't handle it.

It's so far left field, that it does it's job: it becomes a radar blip to any gamer.

- Mario Sports Mix: This one is a little off field. They can make something of this, something more fun than Wii Sports. The idea isn't to cater to the casuals. The idea is to make casuals into gamers. The Wii range is too basic for that. Mario Sports Mix can become competitive for these kinds of gamers.

-- Those are just random ideas that kind of fit the bill of what a first party title at launch should have, but giving room for more powerful ones, like a fully fledged Mario Action Adventure, a Zelda title, but not so much shooting straight to a safe title like a 2D mario or a gimmick display which they should just seriously stop doing. At the very least it would have MK9 (or 10 if we think the 3DS gets succeeded first), which is pretty much a system.... WHEN THE SYSTEM FIRST RELEASES! --

Now, to the MMO. Just another 'new' for Nintendo to do that will really make people rethink if Nintendo just wants to play safe and stale all day. The two IP's I actually had in mind were Metroid or Sin and Punishment. Every time I think about the attack on Norion at the beginning of Metroid Prime 3, I keep thinking this is actually a pretty good start point for making a unique online multiplayer battlefield. It wouldn't be so much versus as it would be working together against rapidly changing environments and AI. The more you explore the battlefield instead of staying on the frontline, the more you realise there are a ton of background operations you can effect during the fight, such as keeping cannons maintained and powered up, to being part of espionage teams.  And of course with it, all the gadgets and weaponry that you'd expect from a Metroid game.

As for Sin and Punishment, I just imagine flying through ruins at high speed Shingeki no Kyojin style. Throw in a class system, make it feel like a community-based RPG on crack and hey presto! A mature game by Nintendo loved by everyone who isn't a casual.

...

Well, that was a tedious task to type up. I wasn't even paying attention half the time. This Wawrinka vs Djokovic match in the Australian Open is way too hype right now.

#266788 EA in the running for "America's Worst Company Award" for 3rd year.

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 15 January 2014 - 02:49 PM

Yeah, I never honestly understood why EA ever one this. I doubt they are actually that bad compared to other companies that have much larger effects on the American population. As I've seen in the previous ones, I'd be putting phone companies and banks waaaaay higher up than a video game company.

#266263 Controversial gaming opinions

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 13 January 2014 - 03:27 AM

I have some more controversial gaming opinions for you all:

- I think Knack is a brilliant game. The more I play it, the more I get frustrated at it and realise how much of a punish the game is. Excellent type of game for the competitive pincushion that I am. The simplistic gameplay turns into a bloody arse when you jack up the difficulty, leaving you anemic at the fact that you thought you had the combat down pat. The desire sensor for the illusive Diamond Relics makes you think of Monster Hunter every time; 5 quests of nope and a random 'helping that guy because what do' filled with YEESSSSSS! The art style is well done enough to make you fall into the same pit trap on every playthrough ever, leaving you to crack a coconut over your head yelling "WHY DO YOU NEVER LEARN, YOU SIDEWAYS CREAM NUTJOY?!"

And the characters are just marvellous in design. You have the Doctor that no one ever calls by his first name, the assistant that has a back story that makes you feel like if there ever was a sequel he might murder the Doctor, the equivalent of Iron Man who gets killed by not you, and Knack, the big golem who looks like Sonic and Knuckles' love child in a LEGO universe. He even has stages of tremendous growth, going from the skinny kid everyone bullied in school, to the fat kid everyone bullied in school, to the weird fanfic love child everyone bullied in school, to a really hairy version of the weird fanfic love child everyone bullied in school, to the guy with a kilt that no one bullied in school because he has a mutha****ing kilt!

To sum it up, Knack is a fantastic game. It's like date rape, without the date.

... in loving memory of Waddle, the ultimate Knack hater of the Wii U Forums.

#266253 When Do You Think Nintendo Will Announce Their Next Handheld Console?

Posted by Auzzie Wingman on 13 January 2014 - 12:09 AM

The Vita's popularity has nothing to do with finger controls. It has everything to do with affordability.

There are a lot of people who want to play the Vita, but the pricing for it is too high for them. For what it is, the Vita is a nice, powerful piece of machinery.
