Hiya! I'm Lain, and I guess I'm not very new anymore, but I haven't introduced myself yet, so I'll get right to it!

First off, "Lain" isn't my real name, but it is the name of an anime character I like. Actually, I'd recommend you watch Serial Experiements Lain if you have the time because it's a neat anime. Anyway, though I use the handle "Lain," I'm nothing like the character. But that bit of information does shed some light on what type of things I take interest in - The Internet and anime.

I've actually been doing forums for quite a while now. I believe I started when I was fourteen or fifteen years old, and I definitely feel I've grown as a person thanks to my experiences online. Right now, I'm a currently a member of eight different forums, three of which you may all be familiar with: Wii U Forums, MLP Forums, and 3DS Forums. I use a different handle in each forum, so if you see a Lain in the other two, it's not me.

Anyway, I joined this forum because I'm interested in the Wii U, and I feel that now was a great time to join as opposed to E3 2011. Wii U news is mostly limited to rumors and rumors, but E3 2012 and a couple of other events are on their way, so this place should become more active with discussion as the days pass. I also prefer small forums, so there's that. But although my joining here is mostly because of the Wii U, I'd still like to talk about everything video games 'cause it's a huge hobby of mine. Hopefully, I'm not the only one who feels that way.

Outside of video games, I'm a pretty big fan of K-Pop, hence my current avatar (which will change kinda often haha), and the gif at the top. I get a lot of flack on other forums for this fandom 'cause apparently K-Pop music sucks, but I really don't care about that. And although K-Pop is a huge fandom of mine, I can totally dig other genres. I actually do appreciate any new recommendations, so feel free to share anything :3

I believe that's all I want to share. If you have any questions, you can ask them over here or over at the IP Chat if I'm ever in there. So peace!

#58797 Team Ninja: Wii U development comparable to PS3/360, hardware always changing...

Posted by Lain on 31 January 2012 - 12:20 PM

When you add all that up you have to believe that we will see a lot of Third Party Support.

This is really what I got from the article. If developers can say that the hardware is developer friendly, third party support increases.

#58459 The World Ends With U

Terrible pun, I know haha. But after seeing the renders of the main TWEWY cast from Kingdom Hearts 3D, I couldn't help, but think this game would be amazing on the Wii U.

If you've ever played the game on the DS, you should be familiar with the combat system involving two screens and use of much of the DS' microphone and touchscreen. Now imagine those plus the use of gyro and whatever else the Wii U controller can bring in. Honestly, it sounds pretty awesome. I generally don't make these sorts of threads, but I really like this idea.

#58004 Dang, there will be lots of people on this website after E3 and WiiU launch

Posted by Lain on 27 January 2012 - 07:59 PM

Oh, well one of the E3's kickstarted it, one of them got it a lot more people
Then a lot jus built up from then.
I don't remember too much though.

That there is a graph depicting the forum's growth (taken from Aether lol). E3 2010 is actually what drove the inception of the forum, but as you can see, it didn't really push growth. Growth started 'round January of 2011, prior to the Japanese launch when David held his pizza party stream. And the worldwide launch pushed everything way up. From that point on, the forum consistently got around 800+ new members a month. But yeah, E3 2011 did experience a small spike with 1200 members joining. I imagine holidays 2011 also experienced a jump in memberships, but I can never really tell since most of these members aren't very active contributors.

#57898 eShop Discussion

Posted by Lain on 27 January 2012 - 02:23 PM

So now that you finished the game, what's your final opinion on it?

Ah yes.. let's see:
  • This game has some awesome difficulty. By that, I don't mean the game is very difficult, but that it provides the right challenges and pacing
  • This game is slow. You can probably already tell from the trailers, but your walking speed does not get any faster. Personally, I think it works pretty well here since rushing through levels is actually a great way to die
  • Speaking of dying, when you unlock the last set of four levels, you'll probably die a lot with the amount of instant death obstacles
  • Late-game (if you collect all the jewels from each level), you get access to a vertical booster. Personally, I feel the power-up is pretty broken, meaning you can bypass a lot of obstacles with some strategic boosting.
  • For the most part, I like the music. It's not as cool as Mighty Switch Force's awesome soundtrack, but it is great to listen to
  • Collecting everything allows you to use a different character. I won't spoil who it is, or what this character can do~
  • The later level designs really emphasize that players take caution before proceeding. The game has several "traps" set up that can get you killed and force you to restart levels. It's frustrating, but I liked it
  • Secret sub-levels are amazing and frustrating. The first two are accessible without power-ups, but the later ones require power-ups to access them. These levels pit you against the worst enemies and a lot of instant death obstacles (spikes especially). Though again, the vertical booster kinda destroys difficulty for a lot of them once obtained.
If you want a numerical rating, I'd give it a 9/10. My only real concern would that some portions of certain levels seem to force you to take damage to progress. Or at least, I haven't found any safe way to get through them without a stroke of luck. A lot of later scenarios really require some quick acting to get through, so if you react slowly, you could potentially die. This is probably the best eShop game to get behind Pushmo.

#56603 Wii U Price Discussion

Posted by Lain on 23 January 2012 - 09:40 AM

My problem with $300, is that that number seems to be too much a loss. And yeah, I don't see Nintendo wanting to sell this at a loss. Assuming a Wii U controller is packed in with it, $300 is super unlikely. $350 is definitely the lowest I'd imagine them going at, with $400 being the next most likely.

#56530 RUMOR: Final Dev Kits more powerful than anticipated

Posted by Lain on 22 January 2012 - 09:19 PM

Let's put this into context before we start going anywhere.

By "supposedly more powerful than anticipated," what does this mean? Do we know of what the initial expectations were? Was this actually impressive to developers? This is good news (I suppose), but better if developers had decenet expectations to begin with.

#56257 Future Proof?

Posted by Lain on 21 January 2012 - 09:58 PM

Yeah, but the point is that you didn't know it was SD, when in fact that information was available before launch. Why would you stick with your assumption and ignore the readily avaiable information when deciding to purchase the product?

#56254 Future Proof?

Posted by Lain on 21 January 2012 - 09:44 PM

once again when nintendo announced the wii theres was no solid info on the specs no one knew the wii was an sd console until the same year it dropped or a little before. it was ignorance the info wasnt there to begin. and to your second question clearly you havent read my original post or you wouldnt even need to ask that.

Dude, check out this article and scroll down to "Technical Specification." It clearly states that the video output is at 480p. Now look at the article's date - That's right, this information was available before the actual launch. That's what matters. If you didn't know about the console specifications beforehand, that's more or less your fault. Expecting HD output is not fair.

#56243 These Exist?!

#56205 PlayStation 4 will probably be alot stronger then the Wii U and Xbox 720

Posted by Lain on 21 January 2012 - 06:48 PM

In regards to weaker architecture of the Wii, it is true that the system missed out on great third party content, but that's only because third parties did not want to work with motion gaming at the time.

I disagree partially.

Motion controls probably don't contribute to the the lack of third party support as much as you believe. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom happened on the Wii. Call of Duty happened on the Wii. A bunch of other genres happened on the Wii. I kinda doubt remapping controls was the central issue with developers here. I'll consider it one of the problems, but the weaker hardware and different GPU were probably the bigger culprits in this area. Basically, if the power difference weren't so great, multiplatforming would have been very feasible for the Wii.

Here's a link to where they confirmed it

http://www.pcworld.c..._ps4_at_e3.html

As I've already said, that doesn't confirm anything. Think about it for a second. The moment Kaz says the PS4 will be announced (at all) is the moment the PS3 sales may drop. Sony doesn't want PS3 sales to drop, especially since 2011 was the best year the PS3 had. The PS4 will be announced soon because Sony isn't going to let Nintendo and Microsoft have an early launch.

I have to say: power does not always equal sales. IF this were the case, the PS3 would be outselling the XBox and Wii by a margin of at least three to one. With that being said, I do believe the Wii U will have a successful launch if, and only if, (deductive logic) they have a good launch catalogue.

Power and potential never sold the console, you're right about that. It was always software that did anything. You have to admit though, that lack of power can be a problem. For the Wii, it's weaker architecture led to the loss of some important multiplat releases. I will admit that they did receive some Call of Duty games, but for the most part the Wii didn't get Street Fighter IV, Battlefield, Skyrim, Mass Effect, Dark Souls, and bunch of other good games. What's important is that the Wii U is powerful enough.

Right now Sony is losing money in their Playstaion division (this year a loss of 449 million USD despites better sales), they sold their HDTV line (this year with a loss of 2.27 billion USD), and their music division is not doing too well (with losses of 132 million dollars in 2011). This is not good news for the gaming industry, the industry needs competition, therefore Nintendo needs Sony. This may sound like an oxymoron to some, but it makes plenty of sense. However, releasing the PS4 right now would be risky to say the least. Ever since 2006 Sony has lost approximately 4.7 billion USD in their Playstation division alone. I don't see there being anyway Sony would warrant the risks for such little reward. A lot of the humdrum, and nonsensical rhetoric within fandom, and the biased (not all) media like to distort the hard and true facts. With tht being said, I don't think Sony is going to reveal a full on console at e3. Maybe a teaser for future things to come, but not a full on console. IF they do, I pray that they will be successful, because the more competition the better an industry will function.

A couple of things here:
  • I believe Sony is actually profitting on each Playstation 3 sold now. It's been a while, but they're in better shape than previous years
  • Sony actually loss 7 billion from the Playstation 3. Err, rather the profits they made off the first two Playstations.
  • I agree that competition is good, but I don't find it necessary. I'll also add that the Wii never really got anything from the PS3 or the 360; or at least I don't believe it did. The PS3 did, however, benefit from the 360.
  • Releasing the PS4 now would be risky in the sense that it'd be a hinderance to PS3 sales. I, however, feel that launching two or more years later is a bigger risk though because Nintendo (and maybe Microsoft) could potentially take control of next generation's third parties. Sony needs third parties to survive.
