#306964 Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Thread: Hunting Intensifies

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 14 January 2015 - 03:26 PM

Gather round!  It’s time for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate!  Start stretching your hunting arm, cause things are about to get crazy!  Newcomer or veteran, it’s time to start discussing MH4U.

If you are a newcomer, I recommend reading the following.  Kind of long for something subtitled “Abridged”, but I think it will get you in the right mindset for the series if you haven’t tried it yet:
http://www.ign.com/b...unter-abridged/

So the demo thing first.  4U is getting the same treatment that smash did, so select players are getting demo codes ahead of time.  EU players are getting them today, while NA gets them tomorrow.  In other words, if you have a demo code now, we can't be friends until tomorrow.

There are two modes, Beginner and Experienced mode.

In beginner, you get large arbitrary stat boosts.  Also, there will be markers near one of the current area's exit to tell you the fastest way to the monster.  You can only hunt the Great Jaggi and Tetsucabra.  This mode does not exist in the full game.

Experienced mode is MH Classic, and how the full game is.  Gear is rank appropriate and while there are no area markers, the monster's position is on the map, making it just like the 3U demo.  Can fight all three monsters.

It sounds like you can choose to hear the tutorial blabber in either mode before you start the quest.  Apparently, you cannot play with someone in a different mode.  If I'm in experienced and your in beginner, we won't be able to hunt together.  I've heard rumblings of the mode you choose being permanent, though I'm not sure if that's permanent just for that session (can re-choose by closing out of the demo and booting it back up) or if it's for all future uses.  I will be choosing Experienced no doubt on the first time.

Weapon Changes From 3U to 4U

If you’re like me, you know your favorite weapons like the back of your hand.  Well your hand may have changed.  Below is a list of weapon changes you will notice in 4U relative to 3U.  I’m 99% sure these are all correct, but verifying these things without the game (and without haggling someone who does 24/7) can be a little difficult.

Spoiler

Here I will include my weapon guides.  Do note that these are currently based on their 3U incarnations, and I will update them as soon as possible.  I have most of it thought out already, I just want to double check controls in the demo before changing things.  It might take some time for me to update these, as I have to stop playing long enough to do it.  Charge Blade will be added to part 1, and the Insect Glaive to part 2:

http://www.ign.com/b...-hunter-gunner/

I recommend searching for Gaijinhunter on youtube, as he is making some good video tutorials for the weapons.

Here are some things that aren’t the basics of Monster Hunter.  The things like the frenzy virus and riding monsters will be added to these soon:

Lastly, discussion about the comparison between MH and Dark Souls.  More of aside really:

Blogs from the Localization Director of the game

You'll have to excuse any haphazard-ness on my part.  Been busier lately than I thought.  Will be updating this with things as I think of them.  Hopefully we can hunt together in the demo or the full game soon.

Prepare for 4U!

So what are you guys looking forward to?  Which new weapon do you want to try first?  If you're new and have questions, ask away.  Once I get the demo, I can't guarantee I'll be on here much over the next couple days though.

#299878 Monster Hunter 4G Direct (Metroid Costumes!)

Between Smash Bros, MH4G soon, and eventually Pokemon ORAS, work productivity must be pathetic in Japan right now.

Nintendo be like: "You want go to work and make money?  Too bad.  You play 3ds now."

#299495 How Can Nintendo Fix Third Party Support?

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 30 September 2014 - 05:48 PM

Without discussing what led to the current state where 3rd parties don't naturally put their games on Nintendo's consoles (which is a large ball of wax in and of itself):

3rd party companies don't believe their games will sell on Nintendo's platforms, so even if they do put their games on it, they usually make a bad port because they don't want to spend extra money

Nintendo fans don't buy 3rd party multiplats (and sometimes 3rd party exclusives) because they think they are crap/shotty ports (whether or not they are crap is irrelevant)

It's a Catch 22 people

The only thing Nintendo can do is throw money at the situation

You know, I wasn't going to make a topic, but if topics are being made for games that only got a trailer this TGS, then I guess MH4U deserves at least two.

Main Trailer.  You might think you have already seen it, but this one has one extra bit at the end, Chameleos:

New opening for the game:

See Sorceror12's topic regarding the Animal Crossingover:

In other news, monsters will now gain new attacks upon g rank, making the differences between high rank and g rank more substantial.

There's the new flagship monster Selregios, henceforth referred to by his nickname, "Steve".

Selregios.png

Aside from being a very mobile monster, he inflicts a new blight that is currently roughly translated as "Laceration".  Imma call it Steveblight.  Basically, after hitting you with one of his scales, it will explode with shrapnel.  This shrapnel can also hit nearby players.  If this second attack hits anyone, steveblight takes effect on them.  While under it's effects, you take a small amount of damage whenever you roll, sprint, or attack.  The only two ways to remove the status is to crouch for a few moments, or eat a well done steak.  Why do those things remove it?  You got me.

His weapons also have a special effect.  When using his blademaster weapons, every time you successfully dodge an attack, your weapons gets automatically sharpened by a small amount.  No idea by how much, but it is clearly not as significant as actually sharpening your weapon.  For the light and heavy bowgun, dodging an attack will automatically reload one bullet of your current shot type.  Bows however, just get a straight damage boost to the close range coating.

There are of course numerous changes to the weapons (relative to MH3U that is).  If someone wants, I can post a list in here.

I'm sure there are other things I've forgotten to mention, but that's all I could think of.

#298332 Your Top 5 or 10 DS Games

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 10 September 2014 - 03:00 PM

  1. Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
  2. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
  3. Megaman Starforce 3: Black Ace
  4. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
  5. Metroid Prime Hunters
  6. Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
  7. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
  8. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
  9. Pokemon HeartGold
  10. Phoenix Wright: Justice for All

I don't know if you are interested in the Ace Attorney Series, but the first 3 games are supposed to get released on the eshop as a trilogy bundle late this year I believe.

As others have said, Ghost Trick is by the same guy who started Ace Attorney, and it is great as well

If you end up liking Phantom Hourglass, then you will love Spirit Tracks.  Fixes a lot of PH's issues.  Also has a surprisingly good soundtrack.

I don't have a huge catalog of DS games myself, so if one of you scoffs at one of my entries, I didn't have the largest pool to choose from.

#297423 Shulk Shulk Shulk!

Even though I already knew thanks to the leak:

He plays as you would expect him too, and Dunban (best xenoblade character) is in his final smash.  Great reveal trailer.

I would have been very suspicious under most circumstances, but then I saw videos of Shulk and Bowser jr in battle.  Either they are the result of the most dedicated faker ever, or this is legit.

#293202 Fire Emblem: Awakening characters and Captain Falcon announced for Smash

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 14 July 2014 - 04:24 PM

Is anyone else seeing a significant speed difference?  I'm not.  Is a little hard to compare since we are comparing a rapid fire trailer to regular gameplay.  Been trying to find a vid of Marth using that same dancing blade combo, since such a long animation would make speed differences apparent, but people don't seem to use it at all in e3 vids.

Also, I'm saying she looks to be the EXACT same as Marth in terms of moveset, not fairly similar movesets with different properties (Like Ganon and falcon).  And if she plays like a speed/power augmented version of Marth, then Sakurai went back on his whole, "I want to make every character unique".  It would also make her seem like more of a simple clone than anything in brawl, which again, seems like sakurai is going back on something he seemed very clear about.  That's why I'm thinking she is to Marth what Male WFT trainer is to regular WFT, but since she has her own personality and Robin is a new character, they decided to include her in the trailer and draw some attention to her instead of a pic of the day mention, as parade as her as "new".

Unrelated:

Found this referring to Chrom being in the trailer

#293178 Fire Emblem: Awakening characters and Captain Falcon announced for Smash

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 14 July 2014 - 12:38 PM

Except for a taunt (which I'd imagine they would've changed anyway for Lucina) I don't see any major differences.  Her up air, neutral air, Down B, Side B, Up B, and idle animations all looked a little too similar to Marth to even be a variation.  I just see her being in the same character slot as marth (selectable in the same way the alt costume for wario in brawl was), and playing the same.  Sakurai has been pretty clear on the "Clone" thing, so I don't see her getting a unique slot of her own on the select screen.  The reason I see them calling her a newcomer is that she isn't actually Marth, as opposed to the villagers which are just gender swaps/you can't call each one its own character.  And why wouldn't he focus more on the differences between her moveset and Marth's in the trailer if she actually plays differently?

Also, "I can only use them so many times, which is why I carry my levin sword!"  Robin, I have some bad news for you.

#291046 Sony officially kills the Vita

Yes Sony, this is totally what the vita needs right now.  People didn't buy the vita for unique vita games that show the system's power, but for iOS and Android games.  3 strikes, you're out.

#290932 Nintendo says third party will return to Wii U

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 19 June 2014 - 01:51 PM

Not unless you actually throw money their way.  The best we are gonna get is probably: a small handful of good exclusives, some ports ranging from gimped to decent, and MAYBE a few japanese developed multiplats.

#289665 Devils Third WiiU Exclusive

It's good that Nintendo is continuing to put their money where their mouth is and buying more exclusives.  Now they just need to advertise more regularly and they should be good.

#288424 Squeenix: No FFXV or KHIII at e3

Posted by Lightning_Ninja on 06 June 2014 - 06:55 AM

Wait, seriously?  Why?  If they were able to show them off last year why can't they show them this year?  I mean, I don't really care much about either series personally (closest I've gotten to Final Fantasy is Bravely Default), but why?  How does that make sense?
